march 12, 2005

sleepily, my eyes opened as cloudy daylight shun into my room. lifting my head from the pillow, i felt drool at the corner of my mouth, and i brought a hand to wipe it.

only to hit myself in the head with a bat.

"ow," i groaned, blinking in confusion at the sight of my old softball bat in my hand. it was small, from when i was in the kids league, and clearly old with time. probably older than juanita though.

i sat up from my bed, rubbing them some as i yawned.

"why did i have my..." i trailed off as memories of last night flooded my senses and woke me up further.

my heart thumped in my chest, eyes wide and shaky with fear as i sat up on my bed. i was even still in my clothes from last night. quickly, i scanned my room for any sign of another being in here with me. thankfully, there seems to be no one.

unless they're good at hiding.

"just shut up," i swung my bad to the bed, getting up as i stripped my clothes while grabbing others to get ready for a shower.

then my phone rang, startling me as i turned to my nightstand next to my bed where my phone was. slowly, i walked towards it, looking at the caller id.

"cora?"

cora is the waitress from carver's cafe, my workplace. she's basically my boss, since she has seniority over me. she was the one who trained me and was essentially my big sister in some sort of way. she made sure no creeps hung around too long since our boss wouldn't often deal with it. she would even treat me to lunch sometimes, and we often talked about whatever.

i grabbed my phone, answering the call before the call can end. "hello?"

"cherie, honey, i was getting a bit worried," she says, sighing in relief as the sound of the diner continued in the background.

"worried? why would you be worried," i asked, rubbing my eyes while taking a seat at the foot of my bed. i glanced over to my desk, and my eyes widened as the digital clock displayed the time.

10:27 am

"your shift started almost an hour ago, i've been trying to reach you," she reveals, greeting some customer who had walked in while on the phone. "i was worried something may have happened to you. you're never late like this."

"i am so sorry," i say, getting up and grabbing my uniform of a blue button up top with black pants to go with. i hugged my phone between my ear and shoulder, struggling to get my pants off to change. "i overslept, i didn't have... the best night," i vaguely admit, stumbling backwards as i pulled up the black pants.

"is everything okay? did something happen," she was quick to question. "was it a boy? girl?"

"no, it's nothing like that," i exclaim, shuffling my shirt off with one hand while trying to stay on the phone with cora. "i just didn't sleep well, i think it was a nightmare," i hate lying, but last night sure as hell felt like a nightmare. "but i'm on my way now!"

"well, don't rush, wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you," she says after a sigh of relief. "i'll see you when you get here." with that, she hung up, which gave me now both hands to get ready faster. as i slipped on my undershirt and began to button up the shirt, i stuffed my pockets with my phone, wallet, and car keys.

i quickly walked down the stairs, and mami was shocked to see me, literally in the middle of setting pancakes down onto lorenzo's plate. "cheche? i thought you left for work already," she says, turning back to the stove to make some more pancakes.
