Josie woke up to a heavy silence

Josie woke up to a heavy silence. She squinted at the lamp beside her bed and flipped the switch, but the light didn't turn on. No electricity.

Sighing, she swung her legs over the side of the bed and opened her bedroom door at the same time as John B emerged from his room.

"Morning," he mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

They both stepped into the living room, where sunlight streamed through the windows, revealing the mess left by Hurricane Agatha.

On the couch, JJ lay sprawled out. "Yo, JJ, you been outside?" John B asked.

"I have polio, bro. I can't walk," JJ answered softly with a mischievous grin. Josie leaned down and gave him a light smack on the head.

"Wake up, JJ!"

He jolted awake, arms flailing, and fell off the couch with a thud.

John B laughed, then turned and walked outside, Josie following close behind. He stretched and yawned as he stepped onto the porch. "Oh man," he muttered when he saw a large tree had fallen over. He put both hands at the back of his head, elbows out, staring at the damage. "That's no good," he said, then repeated under his breath, "that's not good."

Josie stood beside him, still half-asleep. She watched as John B walked over to the boat and started pulling branches off, one by one.

Just then, JJ stepped out of the house with a beer in his hand. He threw an arm around Josie's shoulders, smirking as he looked over at John B.

"Agatha did some work, huh?" JJ said, raising an eyebrow.

John B nodded, chuckling. "Yeah, she did."

JJ burped loudly, and Josie cringed. "Ew," she said, pulling away from him. Josie walked closer to the boat where John B was. JJ followed behind her and threw his arm around her shoulders again. "What you thinkin'?" JJ asked John B.

"I'm thinkin' that storm surge pushed all the crabs out on the marsh maze. All those drum are gonna chase the crab and stay away from my sister," JJ rolled his eyes and ignored the last part. "What about the DCS? Wasn't that today?" he asked.

"Nah, they're not gettin' on a ferry. Come on, think about it. It's God tellin' us to fish," John B said as he pointed to the sea with a branch.

Josie was sitting near the back of the boat, one hand trailing in the water as they sped along, watching the spray rise and fall. The boys were talking about something, but she didn't really care.

"Uh... Good mornin'!"

"Sure hope Guffy's boat didn't sink," JJ said, then sat next to Josie. "He doesn't have insurance."

"Hi, Miss Amy! You guys get through it?" John B asked, looking at the woman who was busy with a fishing net.

"Still here," she answered.
