Whoever created math, I really hate you. I was sitting in class with James next to me, staring at nothing in particular, focusing on everything except Mr. Smith, who was talking about some crazy shit I didn't understand.
Suddenly, Mr. Twomey, our principal, entered the class. Mr. Smith stopped and greeted him. "Hello, class," he said.
Everyone muttered "hey," half-heartedly, as he continued. "So, who here would like to give our newest student a tour of Tommen?"
Instantly, the whole class was wide awake, eager for an escape from math. Everyone's hands shot up, people shouting, "Me!" across the room.
Then, Mr. Twomey's gaze fell upon me, and I knew I'd won. I started standing up, ready to take the prize—until he said, "Mr. Warner, would you like to give our newest student a tour?"
Before he could even finish, the lucky fucker I called my best friend jumped up and was already in front of Mr. Twomey. "Yes, sir, I would love to," he said, then threw me a shit-eating grin and mouthed, "Bye. Enjoy."
I really felt like punching him.
As James started heading out, Mr. Twomey grabbed his jumper and pulled him back. "Before you go, I'd like to inform everyone that our latest student, Ms. O'Brien, is a very important student for our school, so I hope you all treat her with respect."
As they both left, I sat there wondering. O'Brien. The name was so familiar, like I'd heard it a million times. But why on earth did this girl need special treatment? Stuff like that didn't happen at Tommen. We were all crazy rich here, so what made her so important?
