Everyone gathered at Big Mama's house to celebrate her 90th birthday and the New Year. Summer planned to ride with Dominique. However, their plans had changed. She was in the middle of putting her clothes on when she received a call from Dominque.
"Are you getting ready?" Dominque questioned her.
Summer became suspicious. She paused from pulling up her pants to eye her iPhone that sat on the dresser. Her eyes grew low as she parted her lips to speak.
"Umm...yeah. I'm almost ready. I just need to handle a few things."
"Girl..." Dominique trailed off. "I'm still at Sergio's house." She stated with some exhaustion in her voice. Judging from her calm tone, Summer assumed she was still laid up with him.
"You can't make it?"
"I mean...I'm going to make it to the party." Dominique muttered. "I'm going to show up a little later, though."
Summer rolled her eyes, but she didn't say anything.
"I had a lot of catching up to do..." Dominique followed it up with a few chuckles. "I'm sorry, Summer. Just catch a ride with my parents. Grant is riding with them—possibly."
Summer was a little hurt. She and Dominque made plans to arrive at Big Mama's house together. Now, their plans were interrupted due to Dominique being too tired to leave her boyfriend. She was playing house and was obviously comfortable—a little too comfortable.
"Alright."
"Please don't be mad. I'm sorry." Dominique continued. "I'll make it up to you. After New Year, we'll go shopping before you return to campus."
Dominique was freehearted. Summer looked around the guestroom and realized she had a few shopping bags in the corner. Dominique paid for her clothes, accessories, and shoes. Summer was very grateful for her generosity.
"I'm not mad." Summer rasped. "Just make sure you attend the surprise party. Don't let Big Mama down."
"I'll be there."
"Okay." Summer nodded and pushed out, "I'll text you later to remind you—just in case."
The phone call ended, and Summer continued to get herself together. She quickly switched purses since her black purse didn't match her outfit. After doing that, she stood up to check herself in the mirror. As soon as she took one step, she heard a rip.
Rip!
Her mouth flew open in realization when she felt the zipper ripping. She looked down and noticed her left-heeled boot was now ruined. The zipper decided to separate from the misaligned metal teeth. She sighed in frustration but knew what she was up against.
A few knocks sounded on the door. She looked up but didn't say anything. The person behind the door decided to enter anyway. She blinked a few times and realized Grant had stepped inside. He looked handsome, and was dressed casually and neatly.
Oh, we're both wearing light pink. Summer said to herself.
Big Mama's birthday color theme was pink and white. Diane planned the surprise party and wanted everyone to abide by it—even the men. Grant threw on a light pink shirt with chrome heart jeans that meshed well with his designer hoodie and sneakers. A skully was pushed over his head—he was prepared to head outside in the crispy cold weather.
"I didn't tell you to come in." Summer pushed out softly while trying to remove the boot from her foot.
"You didn't say anything." He countered. "I thought something was wrong with you." Grant limped inside and closed the door behind himself. He had no crutches, and Summer wondered why. "I see you're just struggling to get your boot off."
