Marjorie

Marjorie stood brushing her fingers lightly across her lips questioning herself on what had just happened. She cared for Autumn, but she couldn't love her in that way. Autumn was with Winter, and she herself was with Reece. Nothing could ever come of this. They were both in happy relationships. Marjorie was pulled from her thoughts by Sara tapping on her shoulder. "Marjorie, can I get you anything else?" She glanced towards the door, but Autumn was gone. Feeling slightly disappointed, Marjorie answered Sara. "I'll take another glass of rosé, please." Sara walked away and returned a short while later with her order. Marjorie sat slowly sipping her wine. Thoughts swirling around in her head, but what did it all mean; why did Autumn run off? As Marjorie took her last sip of wine, she pulled her phone from her handbag deciding to call Reece to pick her up.

Marjorie headed outside into the night air deciding to try and clear her head while waiting for Reece. Images of the kiss flashing through her mind, she could still feel the sensation of Autumn's lips against her own. Marjorie was pulled from her daydream by Reece shouting her through the rolled down window of his car. Marjorie climbed into the car giving Reece a gentle kiss. "Thank you for coming to collect me darling." The journey back to Marjorie's house was filled with an awkward silence. Reece had questioned why Marjorie was in the bar, but Marjorie didn't explain right away. Her mind was buzzing with conflicting thoughts about Reece and Autumn. When she had eventually broken the news, all Reece wanted was to go to his baby sister. Marjorie had argued that it was maybe not the right time and maybe Autumn and Winter needed some space to be together and come to terms with what they had been through themselves.

As the car pulled into the driveway, Marjorie exited the car and headed into the house before calling back to Reece, "I'm going up to change darling and, then I'll be back down" Reece mumbled in response as he headed to the living room with his head in his phone not paying any attention. As Marjorie changed, the nights events flashed through her mind again, but as much as she tried, she couldn't shake the kiss from her mind. Autumn leaned into the kiss as well. Autumn kissed her back, didn't she?

Marjorie quickly changed into something more comfortable and headed back downstairs to Reece. As she approached the living room, she could see he was still on his phone. "Darling, can I get you anything?" She asked trying to pull his attention from what he was looking at. Reece shook his head. He was too busy in thought and researching statistics. He wanted to get ahead of this and to know exactly how to care for his little sister. Marjorie headed into the kitchen to make them both a coffee. She returned a few minutes later placing both cups on the coffee table and climbed on the sofa curling into Reece resting her head on his chest. They both instantly relaxed a little into each other. Reece's phone vibrated in his hand. "Gorgeous?" "Hmmm?" Marjorie replied sleepily. "I'm going over to be with Aut first thing in the morning. I may not be back till late." "Ok my love." Feeling content, Marjorie snuggled back into Reece's chest and drifted off to sleep listening to him muttering statistics to himself.

Autumn

As Autumn turned back to the door, she touched her lips. The sensation of Marjorie's soft lips on her own burning in her brain. She breathed in the crisp cool air and started walking towards home. She wasn't sure she was ready to face Winter or anyone for that matter. She slowed her pace to give her a little longer to think. She and Winter had brought other women into their bedroom in the past. She didn't share, so they were always there just for her. She tried to convince herself this was the same, but she knew that it wasn't. Marjorie was her brother's girlfriend, and she was with Winter. She knew it would never work, but she couldn't seem to shake Marjorie from her mind either.

As she stopped at the front door to unlock it, she took a deep breath and stilled herself before swinging it open. He was in the kitchen, but she stopped to use the toilet before joining him. The blood-soaked pad yet another reminder of how the hopes and dreams of yesterday were gone. Their baby's future gone. Maybe her and Winter's was too.

She still hadn't shaken Marjorie from her head when she slipped her arms around his waist as he cooked. "My love, I am sorry. Winter, I am so sorry that I failed you." He turned and pulled her into his embrace.

"My sweet, you didn't fail me. These things just happen sometimes." She knew he was right, but part of her still felt like her body had failed them both. She also wondered if he was concerned that they may not have a future after this as well. She didn't see a clear one anymore. She wasn't sure she saw one at all.

As they ate their supper that night, they both kept their eyes on their plates. She couldn't bare to see his pain, and she assumed he must have felt the same. He kept checking his phone, but never looked up at her. She assumed it was family and friends that they had told. People had a way of forcing their thoughts and prayers on you even if you didn't want them. She was glad he was dealing with it so she wouldn't have to.

She stood and pushed the chair in. "My brother is coming in the morning. I am going to shower and head to bed." She turned and headed for the door without waiting for an answer.

He answered anyway. "Alright, my sweet, I will be up as soon as I clean up down here."

After her shower, she laid in the bed trying to lull herself to sleep. Thoughts of her loss and thoughts of Marjorie and their kiss mingled in her head. As she touched her lips again, she realised something.

Marjorie ... Marjorie had leaned into the kiss too.
