The following morning, Maya sat in her office, her mind replaying the events of the night before. She couldn’t shake the memory of Aryan’s kiss, the way he had held her, the intensity in his eyes. She had never felt so vulnerable, so exposed, and it terrified her.
Just as she was beginning to regain her composure, there was a knock on her office door. She looked up, her breath catching as Aryan stepped inside, his expression unreadable.
“Maya,” he greeted, his voice calm but with an edge of determination.
She straightened, trying to keep her composure. “Aryan. What can I do for you?”
He closed the door behind him, his gaze never leaving hers. “We need to talk about last night.”
Maya’s heart pounded, but she kept her tone steady. “There’s nothing to talk about. It was a mistake, and it won’t happen again.”
Aryan raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Is that what you really think? Or are you just scared of what this could mean?”
Maya clenched her fists, frustration bubbling up inside her. “I’m not scared, Aryan. I just don’t want to risk everything I’ve worked for on… on something that has no future.”
Aryan stepped closer, his gaze intense. “How do you know there’s no future? You’re so focused on control, on keeping everyone at arm’s length, but life doesn’t work like that, Maya. Sometimes you have to take risks.”
Maya looked away, unable to meet his gaze. She had spent her entire career building walls around herself, keeping her emotions in check, and Aryan was threatening to tear them all down. She hated how vulnerable he made her feel, how powerless she felt around him.
“I don’t take risks,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “Not with my career, and definitely not with… whatever this is.”
Aryan’s expression softened, and he reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. “Maybe it’s time you let someone in.”
Maya’s breath caught as he leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a soft, lingering kiss. Her mind screamed at her to pull away, but her body betrayed her, melting into his touch. She had never felt anything like this before, a connection so raw and intense, and she found herself craving more.
But as the kiss deepened, reality crashed down on her once again. She couldn’t afford to get involved with Aryan—not when their lives were so intertwined, and certainly not when their rivalry could jeopardize everything.
With a shaky breath, Maya pulled away, her voice barely steady. “We can’t keep doing this, Aryan. I won’t let myself be vulnerable, not with you.”
Aryan’s eyes were filled with frustration, but also a trace of hurt. “Maya, you can keep pushing me away, but it’s not going to make this go away. You’re not the only one feeling this.”
Maya looked down, her heart heavy with a mixture of longing and fear. She wanted so desperately to believe him, to let herself fall, but the stakes were too high. She couldn’t risk everything she had worked for, not for something as unpredictable as love.
“I need you to respect my boundaries, Aryan,” she said, her voice firm, though her heart was breaking.
Aryan studied her for a moment, his gaze searching, as if he was trying to understand her walls. Finally, he nodded, a resigned look in his eyes. “Alright, Maya. I’ll respect your wishes. But just know… I’m not giving up on us.”
Maya watched him leave, her heart aching as the door closed behind him. She knew she was making the right decision, but the emptiness she felt told her Otherwise.
