TWELVE
After returning from their weekend crisis in Costa Vista, Samantha and Najera go back to their usual campus life routine. The following week proves to be unnerving for the both of them as neither of them can relax or concentrate on their studies. In addition, there are also the upcoming finals next week, and this will determine if Samantha will be able to attend the Graduation Ceremony this summer. To top things off, it seems like every other day Samantha and her friend have been getting calls from investigators working for the Divinity. It is only to make sure that they are coping with the ordeal in a healthy manner, but after speaking with them on several occasions regarding discretion, Samantha begins to feel annoyed. Najera doesn't even answer her phone when they try to contact her.
Samantha returns to the cozy sanctuary of her dorm room after a grueling morning of brain-numbing classes. With the weekend around the bend once again, she looks forward to not having to leave her room or answer pesky phone calls again. She plops onto her bed and takes a deep breath, taking in the scent of clean sheets and lavender. She misses her room so much, but there is still one thing that she misses more than the embrace of her fluffy sheets.
She rolls onto her back and stares up at the ceiling, wishing that she can just close her eyes and open them to see Vaughn sitting next to her. Despite how things ended and the nightmarish encounter with Jess, Samantha convinces herself that she would go through it all again if she could see him once more.
"I hope that he isn't in too much trouble," she sighs somberly as she grabs the blanket and rolls herself inside of it until she feels like a fuzzy burrito. "If he is, will that mean I won't ever see him again? I wish I had more time to talk to him." Samantha suddenly recalls the jacket that he allowed her to keep.
She tries to get up to search for it, but she is so lost in thought that she forgets about being wrapped up and squirms until she falls off the bed. As soon as she hits the floor, she unwraps herself and rushes over to her closet to find the suitcase that she never emptied. She swiftly opens it to fling everything out until coming across what she is searching for. Her eyes light up with joy afterward as she holds the jacket up to her snout and takes a deep breath.
"My God, it still has his scent on it," Samantha thinks before prancing back to her bed and gracefully falling into it. "This might not be the real thing, but it will suffice for now."
Eventually Samantha dozes off, unaware of the time that passes. Sam doesn't wake from her slumber until her ears pick up the faint sound of an instrument playing in the distance. She reluctantly opens her eyes and twists her ears toward the sound. To her, it sounds like an electric guitar, and she forces herself out of bed to gaze at her digital clock. Sure enough, the clock shows that it is an hour until midnight, and she moans depressingly after sleeping her entire afternoon away. Samantha stretches vigorously and mulls over what she will do next. Considering the time, she assumes that Najera must be either unable to sleep or arriving from wherever she spends her evenings.
"Well, it's not like I have anything else to do," Samantha thinks after deciding to go check on her friend across the room.
After slowly opening her door, Samantha pokes her head out into a dimly lit hallway that leads to the living room. Before stepping out, she quickly searches for the switch in the wall and fills the area with light, sighing softly with relief. She then tiptoes into the hall and enters the living room. Nothing looks out of the ordinary, but the A/C unit suddenly cuts on and nearly spooks Sam to the point of squealing. After clenching her chest for several seconds, she relaxes and shakes her head pitifully.
"Geez, I really need to get over this nonsense! I'm getting jumpy over every little thing now," she thinks to herself before passing the kitchen and entering the hall that leads to Najera's room. Samantha leans in close and turns her ear to the door, listening to the melody that Najera is playing. Though it is barely audible, Samantha can also hear Najera singing along quietly.
