The Ingalls' had only been living in their little log cabin in Kansas for a short time when a group of Indians decided to raid their home. Charles, Mary, and Laura were away at one of the old Indian camps, leaving a black doctor and Mrs. Robertson to look in on Caroline and the soon-to-be newest member of the family. Caroline was fearful for her unborn child's life, so, hoping they wouldn't harm her or her child, she gave them food and Charles' pipe and tobacco. As the Indians left, Caroline went into labor. When Charles and the girls arrived back home from the camp, they were told the news about the baby's birth. "Oh, Ma," exclaimed Laura. Caroline said, "Charles, come meet your daughter. Mary, Laura, come meet your baby sister." Mary asked, "Have y'all decided on a name?" Charles replied, smiling, "Well, I wanted to name the baby after your ma, if it was a girl after we learned that we were going to have another baby, so her name is Caroline Celestia Ingalls." "But we call her Carrie," Caroline added. "Welcome to the world, Carrie," said Charles, kissing his newborn daughter's forehead. "Welcome to the world, Carrie," Mary and Laura replied. "Welcome to the world, Sweet Carrie," said Caroline, kissing Baby Carrie's cheek, "I love you."
