The infected cut on Caroline's leg was becoming worse and worse by the day, so she opened her Bible and began reading. She selected a passage from the book of Mark. It read, "And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter into life maimed. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life." When Reverend Alden and Mrs. Foster arrived in Johnson's Meadow without Caroline, Charles could feel in his heart that something was wrong. Charles borrowed Reverend Alden's buckboard and scurried home. Once home, he leapt out of the wagon and dashed inside. "Caroline," Charles hastily said, kneeling by his unconscious wife. That night, Mary and Laura comforted each other as they prayed for their mother's recovery. "Pa, I've never seen Ma so sick before. Have you," said Laura. Charles replied, "No, Darling, I can't say that I have." Mary said, "She's gonna be alright, Laura. I know it." Charles smiled. The next morning, a miracle happened— Caroline's fever had subsided and she was now awake.
