Chase's heart pounded as he stood at the edge of the canal, the world blurring around him in the rain. The water below looked so dark, so calm, maybe this was the peace he’d been searching for. The cold soaked into his fur as he shivered, every muscle in his body tensed with the weight of his choice.
His mind replayed those final moments with his family: the yells, the rough hands that tossed him into the street, the door slamming behind him as if he had never mattered at all. He thought of the strangers who sneered at him, the few who threw scraps his way but never stopped to look him in the eyes.
As Chase stared down into the canal, he felt a strange mixture of relief and sadness, his breaths coming shallow and fast. He closed his eyes, letting the rain mix with the tears he no longer had the strength to hide. "I’ve tried so hard, haven’t I?" He thought, each word heavier than the last. "I’ve fought and fought, and all it’s gotten me is pain. What’s left to fight for?"
His chest tightened, and a small, fragile part of him whispered, "But maybe… just maybe…"
Suddenly, a soft sound cut through the silence, gentle footsteps echoing in the alley behind him. Chase stiffened, his ears were twitching. He turned slowly, squinting through the rain. A small figure stood at the entrance to the alley, a child, no more than eight, with a worn yellow raincoat and a shy, concerned look on their face.
The child took a hesitant step forward, clutching something in her hands. “Hey… are you okay?” the kid asked, their voice barely audible over the rain.
Chase blinked, staring at the kid, trying to process the words. No one had asked him that before, not like that. People usually just walked by him or tossed him a quick glance of pity or disgust. But here was someone stopping, looking right at him as if he mattered.
The child knelt, setting down a small sandwich wrapped in foil. “You look… like you might be hungry,” they said gently, nudging it toward him.
Chase glanced at the sandwich, the smell of bread and peanut butter reaching his nose. He hadn’t eaten in over a day, but the weight of his sadness was so heavy that he could barely muster the energy to respond.
The child waited, not moving closer, just watching him with wide, gentle eyes. “I… I saw you from over there,” they continued, pointing toward a nearby building. “You looked sad, so I thought maybe you’d like some company.”
Chase’s throat tightened as he stared at the kid, an unfamiliar warmth creeping into his chest. Company. It was such a simple word, but it held more meaning to him now than it ever had. He hadn’t been anyone’s company for so long, he hadn’t felt like he was worth anyone’s time.
Without thinking, he took a cautious step toward the sandwich, his nose twitching as he leaned down to sniff. The child smiled softly, watching him with an expression so open and pure that Chase felt his walls cracking, his defenses faltering. He took a bite, the taste filling his mouth, and with it came a strange sense of comfort, of connection.
"I saw you staring at the water... Like, with empty look, with pain in the eyes?" She struggled to explain, then she sat on the damp ground across from him, pulling their knees to their chest. “I know things are hard sometimes,” they said, their voice gentle but certain. “Sometimes I feel like I’m alone, too. Like nobody understands. But my mom says that even when it feels that way, we’re never really alone. There’s always someone who cares, even if we don’t see it right away.”
Chase looked up, his eyes meeting the kid’s. There was something in her gaze, quiet strength, a kindness that he hadn’t felt in so long.
For a moment, Chase let himself believe that maybe, just maybe, things could be different. He didn’t know who this kid was or why they’d decided to stop for him, but in that moment, it didn’t matter. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Chase felt the faintest glimmer of hope.
