The weekend arrived in a blink, bringing with it a chill in the air and the holiday spirit everywhere. I'd been looking forward to this day all week, unable to contain my excitement as I thought about the party. I'd imagined it so many times, savoring every detail, especially with Christmas just around the corner and the world turning more festive by the day.
In the narrow bathroom mirror, I checked my appearance, adjusting stray hairs with a careful touch. I wore a fitted black thermal long-sleeve under a deep, blood-red velvet poncho. Paired with black thermal leggings and knee-high heeled boots, I looked ready for the winter chill. My matching red headband and velvet bow earrings added a holiday flair, while a dusting of red blush—courtesy of Mira—gave my cheeks a warm glow. A spritz of sugar-cookie perfume and a touch of gold jewelry completed the look. As I applied the final peel-off lip stain, I caught myself smiling in the mirror, feeling festive and gorgeous.
I picked up the gift I'd wrapped, cradling the medium-sized box close. It was somewhat heavy, wrapped in shimmering gold paper and topped with a silver bow. My handwriting on the attached card read: "For: Vasco." After a good night's sleep at Gun's house, cuddled up on the couch watching dramas, I felt refreshed. Mira had covered for me with Daniel in case he asked where I'd been.
"You ready now? We're gonna be late," Daniel called from the living room, scrolling on his phone.
"Just fixing my hair," I said, wrapping a white knitted scarf around my neck.
"Oh, right. You're in love with Vasco, aren't you?" he teased, but his tone held a hint of something more than playfulness.
"Unfortunately." I gave him a mock frown. "You have such a kickable face," I muttered. He scoffed, hauling himself off the ground with a series of grunts, and we headed out quietly.
The air was biting cold, and the sky was a patchwork of soft grays. As we walked, Enu, Daniel's golden lab, trotted ahead of us in her little red scarf. Daniel wore a matching rosy scarf, a brown puffy jacket, and khakis—all snugly fitted on his stocky frame. Today, he looked surprisingly cute, his cheeks flushed in the cold.
