The first day of junior year was never easy, but for Kang Haerin, it was a ritual of misery. The morning sun filtered through the classroom windows, casting long shadows on the polished floor of Westbrook High.

Students shuffled into the room, some chatting with friends, others half-asleep, and a few staring nervously at the clock

Students shuffled into the room, some chatting with friends, others half-asleep, and a few staring nervously at the clock. For Haerin, it felt like a countdown to another round of stress and awkward encounters. But what made it worse this year wasn't the classwork—it was the one person she "knew" she'd be spending more time with.

Marsh Danielle
—Haerin had known danielle since freshman year, and in all that time, their relationship had been nothing short of a battlefield. She was the perfect mix of charming, smart, and annoyingly good at everything. Whether it was sports, grades, or even getting along with the teachers, danielle seemed to have it all. And that made haerin hate her. She was the golden girl of Westbrook High, always at the center of attention with her curly brown hair and effortless confidence. It was "infuriating".

And it wasn't just that she was popular—it was how she always managed to outshine her at every turn

And it wasn't just that she was popular—it was how she always managed to outshine her at every turn. In class, she always had the answers, the perfect comebacks, and the "smile" that drove her crazy.
"Here's to another year of dealing with the goofball," haerin muttered to herself as she sat down in the classroom, her bag thumping onto the desk.

The door slammed open, and there she was: Marsh Danielle, with her  signature grin, breezing in like she owned the place. Her eyes briefly scanned the room before settling on Haerin. Their gazes locked for a split second, and she rolled her eyes, pretending not to notice the smugness creeping into her smile.

"Looks like we're in the same class again, Kang Haerin"she said, her voice carrying that annoying edge of superiority. "You must be thrilled!"

"Thrilled? Oh, definitely," Haerin  said with a sarcastic laugh, tossing her hair over her shoulder.
"Just what I needed to kick off the year. Another round of 'Danielle's the Best at Everything.' How could I resist?"

Danielle's grin only widened.  "I didn't realize you were such a fan of my fan club. Maybe I should've put you on the list."

"Very funny" Emma shot back, turning to grab her notebook from her bag.  "Don't worry, I'll keep my 'adoration' to a minimum."

She could feel her eyes still on her, her amusement evident even as she took the seat next to her. They'd always had this... "chemistry"—the kind that made everything between them feel like a challenge. They didn't just dislike each other; it was as if the universe had put them in each other's orbit to test their patience and endurance. And every time they collided, sparks flew.

The teacher, Mr. Kim, walked in and started the lesson, but Haerin couldn't focus. She could feel Danielle's presence next to her—his mere proximity seemed to set her nerves on edge. She tried to ignore the way her cologne lingered in the air, how her foot kept tapping against hers under the desk.

"Try not to distract me today, Marsh," Haerin muttered, leaning forward to scribble notes, hoping she'd get the hint.

Danielle just leaned back in her chair, folding her arms across her chest. "I'm not the one who can't concentrate," she said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. "Maybe you should try harder."

Haerin glared at her, resisting the urge to slap her upside the head. She hated how she could rile her up so easily, how she could make her feel like she was always on the defensive.

After what felt like an eternity, the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the first period. As everyone stood to leave, Danielle shot her one last look.

"I'm counting on you to make the year '
'interesting' Vanessa oh i mean haerin," she said with a smirk, before disappearing into the crowd of students.

Haerin could feel her heartbeat quicken, a mixture of frustration and... something else bubbling in her chest. As much as she hated to admit it, part of her "did" wonder what she meant. Could there really be something more to this rivalry, something deeper than just mocking jabs and competition?

Shaking off the thought, she grabbed her books and made her way out of the room. She didn't have time to dwell on Marsh Danielle. This year, she was going to focus on herself—on her grades, her friends, and maybe even figuring out what the heck she wanted to do after graduation. The last thing she needed was to get tangled up in some unnecessary drama with her.

But as she stepped into the hallway, she couldn't shake the feeling that this year was going to be different. Maybe it was the way danielle looked at her today, or the fact that they were sitting next to each other for the next few months. Whatever it was, she had a sinking feeling in her gut.

This wasn't just going to be another year of rivalry. No, something had shifted. And she had a feeling she was going to be spending a lot more time with Marsh Danielle than she ever expected.
And she wasn't sure if that was a good thing... or the start of something completely unpredictable.
