Haerin sat at her locker, trying to ignore the nagging feeling in her stomach. She had 'definitely' not been thinking about Marsh Danielle during her History class, despite what her mind kept replaying: her smirk, the way she leaned in closer when they'd argued about the homework assignment, and that ridiculous comment about making the year "interesting".
She sighed and shoved her textbooks into her bag, willing herself to focus on something, 'anything', other than the fact that she was now "sitting next to her" for the foreseeable future. The bell rang, signaling the start of second period, and Haerin could feel her heart speed up as she braced herself for the unavoidable—walking into class and being 'next' to her again.
"Hey, Haerin, ready for math?" her best friend, Hyein, asked, pulling her out of her thoughts. Hyein was taller than Haerin, with dark straight hair and an easy smile. She was the kind of person who
could laugh her way out of any situation, which was why they made such a great pair."Ready as I'll ever be," Haerin muttered, adjusting the strap on her bag. "But I'm more ready for this 'whole' thing with Danielle to be over."
Hyein raised an eyebrow, teasing. "You mean sitting next to her? Are you sure? I think you two would make the 'perfect' team."
"I'd rather team up with a fire-breathing dragon," Haerin shot back. "At least they're not smug 'jerks'."
Hyein laughed, but Haerin could tell she wasn't entirely joking. Hyein had always been the more optimistic one, always believing that there was something beneath the surface of people, even Danielle. Haerin, on the other hand, had never been fooled by her charming smile or her reputation as the school's golden girl.
As they walked into the classroom, Haerin's heart sank as she saw Danielle already sitting at their shared desk, leaning back casually in her chair, a smirk playing on her pinkish lips when their eyes met.
"Well, well," she said, her voice carrying that teasing note she hated. "Looks like we're going to spend a lot of time together, Kang Haerin. Hope you're ready."
"Ready for what?" Haerin asked, forcing a cool expression onto her face as she sat down beside her.
"More of your 'perfect' answers?"Danielle grinned, unphased. "Nah. I was thinking more of a friendly competition. You know, see who can get the highest grade on the next test. Winner gets bragging rights for the rest of the semester."
"Is that so?" Haerin narrowed her eyes at her. "You're really going to challenge me, Danielle? Do you actually want to get 'beaten'?"
Danielle raised an eyebrow, leaning closer. "Maybe I'm just tired of hearing you talk all this smack without backing it up." Danielle's voice was low, almost daring her.
—
Haerin could feel her pulse quicken. There was something in the way danielle said it, something that made her want to prove her wrong. Marsh Danielle had always been able to get under her skin, but now, there was this... challenge between them. Maybe it was the way she looked at her, like she was testing her, seeing how far she could push. And she wasn't about to let her win that easily.
[You're on,] Haerin said, her voice firm. "I don't back down from challenges. You'll regret it when I take that first place."
Danielle grinned wider, clearly enjoying the fire she'd sparked in her. "I'll be sure to bring you a trophy for second place."
Haerin clenched her jaw, but she couldn't help a small, competitive smile from tugging at her lips.
"Just wait, Marsh. You might want to rethink that 'second place' thing."Their teacher, Mrs. Park, walked in at that moment, and the rest of the class began, but Haerin couldn't focus on anything except the bet she'd just made with Danielle. She 'had' to win. Not just to prove her wrong, but to show herself that she wasn't going to let danielle get the better of her again.
The next hour passed in a blur as Mrs. Park lectured about algebraic equations and how to solve them step by step. Haerin's mind wasn't on the lesson, though. Instead, she kept stealing glances at Danielle, who seemed completely at ease, scribbling answers in her notebook. Was she really as confident as she seemed, or was this all just some elaborate game to her?
"You're gonna lose," Haerin muttered under her breath as she casually flipped through her notes, sensing Danielle's eyes on her.
Danielle shot her a look. "You wish."
Finally, the bell rang, signaling the end of class. As the other students filed out, danielle stood up and grabbed her bag, but not before leaning down toward Haerin with a grin. "Good luck, vanessa ahhhh.. my bad haerin. You're going to need it."
Haerin just rolled her eyes, grabbing her own bag.
"I don't need luck. I just need brains, something you're apparently lacking.""Oh, it's 'on' " Danielle said, winking at her before walking away.
Hyein, who had been quietly watching the exchange, raised an eyebrow as she caught up with Haerin. "Are you sure you want to go down this road? Danielle's really good at getting under your skin."
Haerin shot her friend a side-eye. "I'm going to 'beat' him. Trust me. This whole 'rivalry' thing? It ends now."
Hyein laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I hope you're right. But don't say I didn't warn you."
As Haerin headed to her next class, her mind raced. She had 'never' backed down from a challenge before, and she wasn't about to start now—especially not with Marsh Danielle. This was more than just a simple bet now. It was a battle of wills. And Kang Haerin was not about to lose.
