43. pool

To Kellin, there are few things in this world more freeing than taking your shirt off out in public.

Sometimes he wonders whether or not cis dudes ever realize what a privilege they have. It still feels sort of weird to him, to not have people shouting at him about how "inappropriate" it is. Three years ago, he never would've been able to get away with lying out in the sunshine at the public pool with his shirt off. Why? Because three years ago, he still had tits. Unfortunately.

Even after top surgery (which took so much saving up, Jesus Christ), part of him still wants to cover up, because it's weird having people look at his scars. For the most part, though, he likes to think that he's gotten over it. It certainly feels a lot better.

Today is one of those days where he's relaxing at the pool with some younger cousins that he and his sister have been babysitting. It's also one of those days where Vic Fuentes is working as a lifeguard.

Vic was Kellin's crush back in high school, and unfortunately for Kellin, he seems to only have gotten even more attractive. Also unfortunately for Kellin, Vic is straight (or, at least, he was in high school), which means he has no chance with the guy. Of fucking course.

"Hey, Kellin," his sister, Kailey, calls to him from where she's sitting at the edge of the pool. "Can you come over here and watch them for a sec while I go to the bathroom?"

"Oh, yeah, sure," Kellin says, standing up and heading over to take her spot. "Yeah, I'll help you out."

The only thing is that the spot that the kids are playing at is right next to Vic's lifeguard chair, and Kellin is now sitting right next to him, trying desperately not to stare.

"Hey," a familiar voice says, and Kellin looks up to see none other than, well, Vic. "Do I know you from somewhere?" he asks. "I'm sorry, I just—" He shakes his head. "It's really bugging me. I remember your face from somewhere but I don't know where."

Kellin bites his lip awkwardly. Vic recognizes him from high school, but he didn't start his transition until after he graduated. "We, uh..." Briefly, he wonders if he should lie, but Vic has always been a pretty nice, accepting guy, so Kellin just goes for it: "We went to high school together. I'm Kellin. But you knew me as, uh, Hannah. Bostwick."

Vic stares at Kellin for a moment, glancing down at Kellin's chest and probably taking note of his scars. Kellin just kind of wants to disappear until Vic says, "Oh, yeah! Yeah, I remember you. Huh. No wonder you're cute." The weirdest thing is that he actually sounds serious, not mocking at all. Kellin has to resist the urge to pinch himself to make sure he's not dreaming.

"So," Vic continues, "you come here often? I've seen you around before."

From there, Vic doesn't mention anything about Kellin being trans, though he has to be curious, because people always are. Maybe he heard about it from someone else; gossip spreads quickly in this town. Kellin doesn't dwell on it, though; he's just glad that Vic is talking to him, being friendly, even adding in another flirty comment here and there until his shift changes and he has to switch to a different chair. Before he leaves, though, he says, "Hey, you're pretty cool. We should hang sometime."

"Uh, okay," Kellin says in disbelief.

Once Vic is gone, Kailey sits down next to Kellin and says, "You should totally ask him out."

Kellin tries not to smile. "What? No way. For one, he's straight."

Kailey snorts. "You are so out of the loop. He came out as bi last year."

Kellin stares at her dubiously. "Wait, how do you know?"

"It was all over Facebook," she replies. "He posted a status about it, and then there were other people posting on his wall and shit."

"Huh," Kellin says, nodding. "So that's why he called me cute."

Kailey bursts into laughter.

"Why didn't he say anything about me being trans, though?" Kellin continues. "He knows. Is he just that nice, or is there an alibi? Most people aren't just that nice."

Kailey just shakes her head. "Well, I mean, his sister's a trans woman. He's probably just learned to not really give a shit."

Kellin can hardly believe what he's hearing. "Damn. How do you know everything?"

"I told you! Facebook!" Kailey says, laughing again. "I'm serious. You should ask him out sometime. Maybe not today, but eventually."

Kellin doesn't say anything, just stares at Vic, who is sitting in a lifeguard chair near the other side of the pool. Vic looks over at him in the same moment and does a little wave at him, and Kellin waves back, once again trying to hide a smile.

"Maybe," he says finally. "Maybe I will."
