20. breaking the rules; 23. weight of the world

“Vic,” Kellin says to me. “You’re sad.”

I bite my lip and don’t respond. We’re both lying on the grass of my backyard, staring up at the night sky.

“What’s wrong?” he persists.

“Nothing,” I say. It’s a dumb move. I’m a bad liar as it is, and he knows me better than anyone.

“Bullshit,” he says, shifting onto his stomach and propping himself up on his elbows. “Talk to me.”

I close my eyes, wishing to just disappear. I don’t want to face reality.

“It’s about us,” he continues, “isn’t it?”

And, as always, he’s right. It is about us.

“It’s just…I hate the world,” I blurt, opening my eyes back up and suddenly wanting to get it all out. “I hate my stupid homophobic parents and I hate that we’re pretending we don’t have something because we don’t want them to kick me out on the streets like they said they would. I hate that aside from you, they’re the only people I have. I hate fucking everything.”

“You don’t hate me,” Kellin says, leaning in close, his lips against my ear.

I sigh, turning my head to look at him. “I just…it feels like the wait of the whole fucking world is on my shoulders. And it’s hard to deal with, Kells. I’m sorry, but it is.”

“It’s okay,” he whispers. “And, well…I know what would take that weight off. At least temporarily.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “What?”

He climbs on top of me swiftly, kissing me softly. He’s right again—for the few seconds that his lips are on mine, I feel okay.

“Kells,” I say when he pulls away, “this is dangerous. This is…we’re breaking the rules here.”

“Fuck the rules,” he replies. “I love you.”

I can’t help it—a smile slowly spreads across my face. “I love you, too.”
