Felix and Samantha strolled through the bustling downtown farmer's market, the sun high and bright overhead. A breeze tugged at Samantha's hair, making her laugh as she brushed it back. Felix found himself smiling more than he had in days, feeling lighter somehow in her presence. Her laughter, her easygoing smile—everything about her felt simple and comforting, as though she was a warm patch of sunlight in an otherwise cloudy sky.
They paused at a stall selling fresh strawberries, and Samantha's eyes lit up as she picked up a basket, inhaling the sweet scent. "Oh, these look amazing," she said, turning to him with excitement. "Want one?"
"Sure," he replied, watching as she handed him a ripe strawberry. He bit into it, the sweetness bursting on his tongue, and for a brief moment, he allowed himself to be fully present, to savor this small, sweet moment with her.
Samantha watched him as he chewed, her eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint. "You know, you're kind of cute when you're not brooding," she teased, bumping him playfully with her shoulder.
Felix rolled his eyes but couldn't hold back a chuckle. "Brooding? Really?"
"Yes, Mr. Moody," she replied with a grin, tossing her hair over her shoulder. "I see it all over you. But don't worry, it's part of your charm." She winked, clearly enjoying getting under his skin just a little.
He shook his head, trying to hide the blush creeping up his neck. "I didn't realize I had a type," he said dryly, but there was a warmth in his voice he couldn't hide.
They continued walking, stopping now and then to sample homemade jams, fresh-baked bread, and even a spicy salsa that made Samantha's eyes water. Felix laughed as she fanned her mouth, pretending to offer her water only to pull it back at the last second, watching her glare at him with mock offense.
"You're terrible!" she managed, laughing despite her teary eyes. "Remind me why I'm out with you again?"
"I'm still trying to figure that out myself," he joked back, the familiar edge of sarcasm softened by the warmth in his eyes.
After they'd made their way through most of the market, Samantha led him to a small outdoor picnic table tucked at the end of the street. They found a spot beneath an old oak tree, and as they settled in, Felix noticed a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"Okay, I have to ask," she said, "Why do you seem...distracted?"
Felix's stomach tensed, and he looked away, the shadow of recent days creeping back into his mind. "It's... complicated," he said, his voice quiet, his gaze focusing on a spot in the distance. "I just... I've had a lot going on lately."
