Chapter 1

When you are the age I was and see a dead human being. Your life changes, you start to realize the death in the world. You learn to except it.

Me and my pals were only 12 when we saw the first dead human being. It was me, Haze Chambers, My brother, Christopher Chambers or Chris. Our three other friends Gordie, Vern and Teddy.

It was a long time ago, only if you measure in years.

I was walking with Gordie on our way to the tree house but he stopped and bought a magazine to read. He liked to read and write so I'm not that surprised. He purchased the magazine and we walked out

I'm more of the quite type but I'm used to talking to him. Me, Him and Chris are pretty close. We walked to the tree house and walked up the ladder, doing the secret knock before stepping inside

"Hey Chris, Hey Ted" I said as I pulled myself in. They said 'Hey' in unison, not taking there eyes off there poker game.

"Hey, How do you know a Frenchman's been in your backyard?" Chris began one of his jokes. I smiled and looked up from the magazine I was reading while Gordie played poker, knowing where this joke was going

"Hey, I'm French, okay." Teddy said in defense as if it were offending him "Your garbage cans are empty and your dogs pregnant" He says and we all chuckle except Teddy

"Didn't I just say I was French?" Teddy said and I rolled my eyes "You're fine, Even if it was you who got our dog pregnant. I wouldn't believe" I said and he huffed "Yea, our dog isn't that desperate" Chris chuckled and we all laughed and Teddy rolled his eyes

"I knock" Chris said and knocked on the table "Shit" Teddy groaned "Twenty-nine" Gordie said and Chris smirked mischievously "Twenty-Two" He laughed and Gordie slammed his cards down

"Piss up a rope!" He huffed and I handed him his magazine.

"Gordie's out. Oh Gordie just bit the bag and stepped out the door!" Teddy laughed and I kicked his chair causing him to fall. We broke into laughter as he sat back up rubbing his head "What'd you do that for!" he said and I laughed and looked out the window. Vern was running up the hill,

"Come on man Deal" Gordie said opening the magazine. Teddy was the craziest in the group, I always had a soft spot for him because of his dad issues. I know me and Chris have dad issues to but not like the ones he has, at least not a bad.

"I knock" Teddy grinned "You four eyed pile of shit!" Chris exclaimed. I have always love Chris' enthusiasm about things, how he was just generally happy.

I had zoned out but next thing I knew I heard a knock at the door, the wrong knock "That's not the secret knock" Gordie groaned and I flicked a cigarette and it hit Chris. Him throwing it back at me with a grin.

"Come on guys open up" He whined and we all exchanged looks "Vern" we all said in unison, Vern pulled himself in

"Oh man you are not gonna believe this. This is so boss, oh man wait till you hear this. It's unbelievable. Let me catch my breathe. I ran all the way from my house" He said out of breathe and we all grinned

"I ran all the way home... Just to say I'm Sorry!" We all sang. I laughed as Vern complained. I had zoned out, thinking about how I was hoping this would never change. This is my family, all of them.

I zone out a lot and Chris usually is the one to shock me out of it, but Gordie shook my shoulder. Everyone had wide eyes and we're looking at me "Ya hear that Haze?" Chris said and I furrowed my eyebrows "What?" I said and Vern looked me deep in the eyes

"You guys wanna go see a dead body?"
