It was a sunny and hot day in early June, and Privet Eie was once again waiting for a call. His ancient AC unit in his office building had gone out, and he was miserably waiting for a call about when it would be fixed. His windows didn't open, so he had no way to bring down the temperature. He decided to take a walk around town and get some lunch to pass the time and grabbed his keys and wallet. On his way out the door, his phone rang. Both annoyed and hopeful, he answered it.

"Hello?"

"Hello," replied the President of the United States, whose voice Privet knew from ads, "I have a case for you, and I'm willing to pay $50,000 for you to solve it."

Privet was more than intrigued.

"Tell me more, sir."

"Well, someone has been going from state to state across the nation killing 10 people in each indiscriminately, they have hit Washington, California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado. With ten days between each strike. It seems as though they are slowly working their way East, but we can't catch them. That's why we called you."

"Yes Mr. President, I will help."

"Thank you, thank you. We believe our killer is headed for New Mexico next. I will send you a list of the victims who were killed soon."

"Thank you, Mr. President," with that, the President hung up, and Privet was left to mull over what he had just been told.

His first thought was if there was any connection between the people killed, though the president had said it seemed to be random. And why did the number ten keep coming up: ten victims, ten days between each attack, and New Mexico would soon be the tenth state to be hit. He soon found an article about the murders.

Breaking News: 90 victims murdered in the US

10 states including Washington, California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado have had 10 random citizens murdered mysteriously, each in a different way, the most common being poison. Police and the government are working hard in an investigation to figure out who is behind these murders, if they really are random, and which state will be next. We will be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.

Not long after he finished the article, his phone rang.

"Saundra, you can't call me during work hours," he said, slightly annoyed.

"Yeah, I know, but this is important! Have you read the paper??" she said urgently.

"About the murders in the states? Yeah. I got a call from the President himself." Privet bragged.

He heard Saundra scoff and then say "You care more about the fact that the President called you than why he called you?"

Privet realized how that sounded "Uh, no. I understand the grim situation but c'mon, it's the President!"

"Unbelievable," Saundra muttered. "Anyway, I'll be over to your office soon. We need to find the names of the victims so we can find out if the murders were connected in any way."

"Alright. Get me a coffee on your way."

"I'm your assistant, not your barista." Saundra sassed, hanging up.

"Sometimes I wonder why I put up with her," Privet muttered.

Privet was pleasantly surprised when Saundra came in with two coffees and handed one to Privet.

"Thanks"

"Whatever, don't get used to it, let's get to work," she huffed.

They both turned to the computer, where Privet had compiled everything they knew about the case into a file.
