I take a deep breath as I approach the meeting spot, clutching my phone on one hand. It feels like forever since I last saw Rui in person, and the thought makes me a little... awkward, if I'm being honest. I glance around, and the second I spot him, my heart does a little flip.
He's standing there, hands tucked into his pockets, looking down at something on his phone. I don't know if it's just me, but... has he always looked this handsome? I blink, feeling my cheeks warm, and I quickly shake the thought away. We're just friends, nothing else...
I remind myself of that as I walk closer.
"Oh, hey, Rui..."
I manage, trying to keep my voice steady. He looks up and his usual grin appears.
Rui: "Hey, Nene. It's been a while, no?" He says, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Yeah..." I mumble, looking down at my shoes.
Rui: "So, you ready?"
I nod, a little awkwardly. "Y-yeah, totally..."
He raises an eyebrow.
Rui: "You sure? You sound a little... nervous?"
I bite the inside of my cheek, forcing a laugh.
"Just... been a while since we actually hung out, that's all, heh..."
Rui tilts his head, studying me for a moment.
Rui: "It has, hasn't it? But we're both here now at the moment." He says, his tone lighter. "Let's go now, shall we?"
We walk in silence for a bit, and I keep my gaze on the sidewalk, hoping he doesn't notice my blush. When we finally reach the place, my nerves creep up again as I spot the small group already waiting.
A pink-haired girl practically bounces in place, while a blond boy with an over-the-top grin stands beside her.
???: "HELLLOOO!! I'M EMU OTORI, IT'S MEANING SMILEEE!!!!"
???: "AND I AM THE FUTURE STAR OF THIS WORLD, THE ONE AND ONLY TSUKASA TENMA!!!"
My cheeks flush, and before I realize it, I'm half hiding behind Rui, my fingers clenching the fabric of his shirt. This is wayyy out of my comfort zone.
He glances down at me, giving me a reassuring smile.
Rui: "Hey, it's okay. Take your time." He looks back at the others. "This is my good old friend, Nene Kusanagi. Give her some space, though."
Emu nudges Tsukasa and gives me an encouraging thumbs-up. It seems they already planned to make me feel welcome.
Emu: "Then let's make a plan! We'll hang out together— maybe at the mall or something! We'll be great friends in no time!!"
I peek out from behind Rui, feeling my nerves fade just a little. Maybe this won't be so bad.
