A Bitter DecisionThe weight of James's words lingered in the room, heavy like the thick, damp air that clung to the stone walls. Eliza sat in silence, her mind whirling with everything she had just learned. The truth about her father, the Duke's machinations, the prince's involvement, and now this new, dangerous path before her—it was overwhelming.
Alden stood by the window, his hand pressed against the sill, his eyes scanning the darkening sky outside. The tension in his posture told her everything she needed to know: he was as unsettled by this as she was. He had always been her protector, her rock, but now even he seemed uncertain. What was she supposed to do? What could they do?
"How do we even trust this group?" Eliza's voice broke through the heavy silence. "How do we know they aren't just another part of the game?"
James met her gaze, unflinching. "You don't. But your father won't stop until he has you under his control. The Duke and his allies, they'll do whatever it takes to eliminate any threat. That includes you. And now, you are their greatest threat. If you don't stand up to them now, they'll sweep you aside like they did your mother. And no one will even remember who you were."
Alden turned to face her, his face etched with concern. "You don't have to do this alone. Whatever you choose, I'm with you. I've always been with you."
Eliza's heart tightened at the depth of his words. She wasn't alone. Not with Alden by her side.
But even with his loyalty, even with his unwavering support, Eliza knew what she had to do. She couldn't go back. There was no turning back to the life she had known, not after the truth about her father and the prince. Her fate was no longer in her hands alone. It was tied to something far greater—something that demanded action.
She took a deep breath, her decision firming within her. "I'll fight," she said, her voice steady, but the uncertainty behind her words was undeniable. "I won't let them destroy everything my mother believed in. I won't let them control me."
Alden's eyes softened as he took a step toward her. "Then we fight together."
For the first time since the storm, Eliza felt the weight of her decision settle into her chest. She wasn't just running anymore. She was choosing a side. She was choosing her future.
And it was a future she would fight for, with every breath in her body.
