Chapter Twenty-Two:
The Unseen DangerThe sun's warmth filtered through the thick canopy above, its golden rays dappling the forest floor with shifting patterns of light and shadow. Each flicker seemed alive, moving in time with the gentle swaying of the trees. I leaned back, letting my weight settle into my hands, and tilted my face upward, drinking it all in.
Above us, the forest stretched endlessly. The air was rich and fragrant, laced with the damp, earthy scent of moss and the faint sweetness of wildflowers that hid among the underbrush. The sound of the waterfall was ever-present, weaving into the melody of rustling leaves and distant birdsong. There was something timeless about this place, something sacred.
My gaze drifted from the towering trees to the waterfall ahead spilling over the rocky cliff in a shimmering curtain. Sunlight struck the water, fracturing it into countless silver threads that sparkled like stars. Below, the river stretched out in a sinuous curve, its clear waters reflecting the vibrant greens of the forest. Every detail felt impossibly alive, as though Eywa herself had breathed her essence into this one secluded spot.
But it wasn't just the beauty of the place that stirred something deep within me. It felt... familiar, though I was certain I'd never been here before. There was a pull, an ache, as though this place was calling to a part of me I didn't fully understand. I closed my eyes, letting the rhythmic sound of the rushing water wash over me, its soothing cadence drawing me into a trance-like calm. My breathing slowed, and then, like a whisper carried on the wind, a memory began to surface.
I could almost feel the bow in my hands, supported by another figure next to me, the taut string vibrating with the energy of a perfect shot. I saw the fish glinting beneath the surface, my arrow striking true. Once the arrow hit my target, I spent no other moment before I jumped into the shallow water as I picked up the arrow that hit a fish.
"Neteyam, the mighty fisherman!" A voice echoed, full of pride and warmth. It was a voice I hadn't heard in... forever, yet it came to me now as vividly as if it had just been spoken. My younger self's laughter followed, light and carefree, as though I hadn't yet known the weight of responsibility.
"By the rocks, right where you said," the younger voice... my younger voice exclaimed, triumphant and breathless for a second as I held arrow caught fish in my hand. The memory was so real it made my chest tighten.
The older voice—so familiar yet elusive—was the same one I had encountered during my connection to the Whispering Greatcap. The realization sent a shiver through me, and I inhaled deeply, grounding myself in the scents and sounds of the present. But the memory slipped through my fingers like water, leaving behind only an aching emptiness.
