Chapter Thirty-Nine:
Into the MazeWe landed gracefully, Txä'vo and I, dismounting from our ikrans just outside Richard’s secluded hideout. The metallic door to his underground sanctuary loomed ahead, a sharp contrast to the lush landscape around us. Sliding it open, we stepped inside, the hum of machinery greeting us like an old friend.
This had become routine over the past days—flights between Richard’s base and our higher camp in the floating mountains, juggling the endless responsibilities of organizing scouts in Kinglor Forest. The Na’vi's connection to Eywa and their planet allowed us to navigate the terrain far better than the sky people ever could. It was our edge, and we used it.
Richard stood by the table in his fresh pair of military pants and a grey coloured T-Shirt. He looked up as we entered, a broad grin spreading across his face. "Olo'eyktan Txä'vo, you're here!" he announced theatrically. Txä'vo's ears twitched, and I caught the faintest tint of purple on his cheeks.
"Richard," he muttered, his tone tinged with exasperation.
Richard couldn’t resist teasing him every time, marvelling at how the same boy he’d seen years ago was now the leader of an entire clan. “What’ve you got for me?” Richard asked, turning serious, clearly referring to the intelligence our scouts had gathered.
Txä'vo straightened. "The warriors are ready, and we’ve confirmed the western perimeter's weaknesses. All we need now is to wait for the eclipse before we move."
Richard nodded in approval, pulling up a schematic on his computer. The past days had been a blur of relentless preparation, honing every detail of the plan to ensure perfection. He had spent hours teaching Ey'ko his role, and while Richard assured him his tasks were minimal, I could tell it was far from the truth.
"Alright, Ey’ko," Richard had said days earlier, leaning in with a mischievous grin, "you just need to understand the basics."
But 'the basics' turned into Richard drilling him on everything from the English alphabet to basic computer programming. Ey'ko had struggled at first, but Richard’s praise for the Na’vi ability to learn quickly wasn’t misplaced.
And it wasn’t just Ey’ko. Richard had taken to training all of us—Txä'vo, Tso'lek, Ey'ko, and me—on how to use sky people’s weapons. Rifles, guns, grenades… The arsenal was overwhelming, but our instincts made the lessons manageable.
I knew that Richard, however, never imagined he’d find himself in this position again. After everything that had happened, he had sworn to never meddle in the RDA’s affairs, vowing instead to live a quiet life in Pandora’s untamed wilderness. But fate had a way of pulling him back. Now, here he was, working alongside me, the daughter of his dearest friend.
