Feeling myself slipping back into consciousness, I already had a pretty good idea of what happened.
I blacked out.
'And even if I've only been in this room once before...' I thought, slowly opening my eyes, hoping that I hadn't wound up where I was thinking.
Sadly, that was the exact situation. Once again, I was staring up at the unfamiliar wooden ceiling of Stinada's medical facility.
With this realization, I could only groan and throw my arm over my eyes, as if I was trying to shield myself from the sight. For all my effort, all I managed to do was pass out. Completely unfitting of a Hero, and, childish delusion aside, a major kick in the gut.
It was then that I felt some weight beside me. Pup, I figured, likely curled up and waiting for me to get off my butt.
"Alright, I'm back..." Wanting to let her know that I was awake and ready to go, I reached down to ruffle her fur.
Or, at least, what I thought was her fur... I immediately noticed the difference in the texture and thickness. Pup's fur was far fluffier, and always carried a subtle edge of electricity thinly restrained and ready to discharge at a moment's notice, but what my fingers' were digging through had neither of those qualities.
Not to mention that Pup's face popped into the corner of my vision, on the complete opposite side of the bed from where my hand was, her head tilted slightly with curiosity...
'...What the heck am I petting...?'
Slightly confused and entirely curious, I quickly sat up in the bed, letting my eyes lock onto what I had been petting.
Rather than the creamy yellow, black striped fur that was always prickled with the surge of electricity, there was light silver hair that was nowhere near as soft, and attached to some girl...
The same one I saw in the forest before I passed out, her head laid on her arms on the edge of the bed, napping peacefully.
Obviously I found it weird that she was here to begin with ━ I mean, who just curls up for a nap next to a total stranger? Did no one ever tell her about "stranger danger"? ━ but once I started thinking past that, I started questioning the fact that she was here alone.
Even if I was barely conscious and a couple seconds away from passing out, I remember talking to some other guy who had her on his shoulders. So where'd he head off to without his... daughter?
That seems pretty irresponsible, but, really, who am I to talk about other people's parents considering mine?
Though, now what do I do? Do I wake her up, or...? I can't exactly leave her here in good conscious...
'The Stinada Republic isn't exactly a bad place, from what I can tell, so it's not like she'd be in any danger if I did, but still, I'd feel kinda bad...'
Guess I'll just sit here until she decides to get up─ Oh, nevermind, she's getting up already! Super convenient.
She groaned tiredly as she sat up, lazily rubbing her eyes.
"Mweeeh... Uncle Potamer, did you get into a fight or something? You stink..."
My face reflexively twitched in anger. I mean, this was the second time this little brat had made fun of me, and I didn't even know her name yet! Who does that?
"Hm..." Finally, after rubbing some of the sleep from her eyes, she opened them and finally looked at who she was actually talking to.
"GAH! IT'S THAT WEIRD KID FROM THE FOREST!"
