THE AIRPORT air is cold at nine am. there is a bustling hive of activity, packed with people going in and out, families hugging goodbye, couples reuniting. the floors are a glossy tiled white, the walls a stark, clinical cream.

signs hang from the ceiling, directing passengers to various gates, while the sound of a pa, system is just audible amongst the din of conversations.

the line to through security and customs is absurdly long, snaking around the area in a serpentine path that seems to go on forever. families with children, businesspersons in suits, all look impatient and slightly harried, waiting for their turn to pass through.

the smell is heavy with the scent of coffee and cheap perfume, mingled with the hum of air conditioning. across from her a man in an embroidered suit is yelling at an attendee, gesturing wildly and drawing the attention of the people around them.

while she sits, waiting for her dad to come back from the bathroom so that they can find their car and go, the photos of her and carter from her phone she deletes.

the photos are gone in a second, removed from her phone's storage as easily as if they had never existed. she can feel a pang in her chest, a twinge of guilt as the images disappear from sight.

everything just happened too fast with them, things that weren't supposed to happen. they were mistakes and she would hide what happened here forever, or.. for as long as she could.
