The echoes of the gunshots still resonated in Isabella’s ears as she found herself in an unfamiliar room, her vision blurred and head spinning. The faint scent of old wood and leather filled her nostrils as she struggled to steady her breath. When her sight cleared, she noticed a tall figure standing by the window, the moonlight casting shadows across his hardened face.

“Alexei,” she stammered, her voice trembling as her confusion gave way to recognition.

His eyes, cold and devoid of the warmth she once knew, locked onto her with an unsettling intensity. He walked towards her, his posture calculated, his smile sharp as a blade.

“Did you really think your husband could protect you from the past?” Elysio—Alexei Vasquez—sneered, the name that once spoke of loyalty now dripping with venom.

Isabella’s heartbeat thundered in her chest as memories from long ago unfurled in her mind. Alexei had once been Leo’s closest companion—almost a brother. Growing up, they had shared everything: the empire their fathers ruled, the whispered dreams of power, the laughter of careless youth. But when Leo’s father, Alistair, chose his own son as the rightful heir, everything had changed.

Alexei had harbored envy, a silent storm that only grew with time. But even then, Leo had seen him as family—until the day he had to choose between saving the empire and protecting Isabella. The fateful decision that sealed their fates.

**Flashback**

The night had been shrouded in chaos as fires raged through the heart of the Vasquez empire. Gunshots echoed like a war drum, punctuated by the anguished shouts of men who once held unwavering loyalty. Leo’s face was bruised, blood trickling down his temple, as he stood in front of Isabella, shielding her from the storm.

“Leo, we have to go!” she pleaded, clutching his arm as panic flooded her voice.

He turned to her, eyes fierce with resolve, and whispered, “I can’t let him take you. Not after everything.”

Alexei’s voice cut through the night like a blade. “You would choose her over us? Over the empire that raised you?”

Leo’s heart fractured at the sight of his cousin, once his shadow, now his rival. “This ends tonight, Alexei. The empire dies here so she can live.”

Alexei’s expression twisted with rage as he realized the weight of Leo’s choice—the empire, their power, all sacrificed for a promise Leo made long before blood and betrayal turned his world to ashes.

**End of Flashback**

———

“This is all because of you,” Alexei spat, pulling Isabella from the memories and back into the chilling present. “He ruined everything for you.”

Isabella’s throat tightened, the truth settling heavy in her chest. “And now you want revenge,” she whispered, finally understanding the true cost of Leo’s protection—his life, his family, and the empire he once commanded.

Alexei’s lips curled into a twisted smile, his eyes gleaming with malice. “Revenge? No. I want what’s mine. The empire, the power that should have been mine,” he said, his voice dripping with venom. “Leo was weak, thinking he could save you, thinking he could protect you from the truth. But I will finish what he started. The empire belongs to me now, and I will make sure you understand that.”

Isabella’s knees weakened, her pulse racing as the weight of his words sank in. Her gaze fell to the ground, her mind scrambling to piece together the shattered fragments of the past. She had always known there was more to Leo’s sacrifice than he had told her, but hearing Alexei’s words—hearing the hatred that laced every syllable—made everything so much clearer.

The room seemed to close in on her, the walls pressing against her as if they, too, were suffocating under the tension. “You won’t get away with this,” Isabella whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

Alexei’s laugh was cold, devoid of any warmth or humor. He stepped closer to her, his shadow swallowing her whole. “You think you can stop me? You’ve always been so naïve, Isabella. You think love, loyalty, and honor have any place in this world? This is the reality. This is what happens when you let emotions cloud your judgment.”

Isabella’s hands clenched into fists at her sides, her resolve hardening. No more running. She couldn’t afford to be weak anymore, not for herself, not for Leo, and certainly not for the empire that had been destroyed in the name of a promise she hadn’t fully understood.

“Leo chose me because he loved me,” she said, her voice trembling, but filled with determination. “And I will honor that choice. I will make sure the empire he saved with his sacrifice isn’t lost to your selfishness.”

For a brief moment, Alexei’s expression faltered, a flicker of something—maybe doubt—crossing his face. But it was gone as quickly as it had come, replaced by a cold, calculated mask.

“You think you can defeat me, Isabella? You’re nothing but a pawn in this game,” he sneered. “And now you’re just a reminder of everything I lost. I’ll destroy everything Leo built. I’ll burn it all to the ground.”

With that, Alexei turned on his heel, heading toward the door. Before he left, he glanced back at her, his eyes sharp as knives. “You won’t be safe, not from me, not from anyone. This is just the beginning.”

Isabella stood in the middle of the room, trembling but resolute. She had lost Leo once. She wouldn’t lose him again—not this time, not when she finally understood the depth of the sacrifices made for her sake.

As the door clicked shut behind Alexei, Isabella took a deep breath, steadying herself. It’s time to end this. The war was far from over, but she would fight—no matter the cost.

The night was far from over. And the shadows of the past would not have the last word.
