The ride back to the chapel from the wall isn't exactly awkward per say, but I can definitely tell that my dad wants to say something. Usually, he doesn't have a hard time putting words together, meaning it's one of the conversations I've dreaded to come.
He had offered for me to join him just in case since the soldiers he was taking were 'incompetent.' It's odd for my father to suggest I come along just for the sake of coming along. If incompetent soldiers were always an issue, I would join every mission we have. No, there's an ulterior motive in there somewhere.
We follow the deep trench carved into the ground by Rod Reiss's titan so the journey is rather quick now that we don't have to think about where we're going.
"So..." my father finally starts, "is what Sasha said true? Are you and Jaeger...together?" He says the word 'together' like it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.
Damn it. I was hoping I had longer.
I clear my throat. "Wow, the grass sure is green today."
"Nice try."
A sigh passes my lips and I run a hand over my face. "I guess...we are. It's not serious."
"I see." He nods slowly, his eyes flickering straight ahead and back to me. "Are you being...safe?"
"Dad!" I shout, immediately flooding with embarrassment at the question.
He gives me a look. "I'm sorry, but you're at that age now and I can't help but worry."
"Oh my god." I groan, leaning forward to drop my forehead to the back of my horse's neck.
"You can't blame me for wanting you to be careful," he replies. "I don't need a grandchild any time soon."
Well you're on the right track because I'm about five seconds away from ending it.
"You don't need to worry about that. Ever." I furrow my brows, hating every second of this conversation. In all honesty, I'm not even sure I want kids, and it's definitely not something I think about. "Now, can we please not talk about this?"
"Yes, yes, of course." he murmurs, shooting me a few more glances, sucking in a sharp breath. "It's just...Jaeger? Really?"
To be fair, I don't really know how that happened either. "Dad, please." I groan, narrowing my eyes at him.
He finally relents, holding up a hand as a sign he'll stop. Thankfully, he doesn't say anything else, the rest of the ride passing in silence, save for the birds singing overhead and the breeze ruffling the trees.
Even from a distance it's clear to see that there's nothing left of the Reiss chapel. We draw closer and examine the ruins, there's crystal and stone debris alongside the crushed corpses of Kenny's squad that couldn't make it out of the blast in time.
I find the blonde woman who shot Hange in the shoulder, her entire body is completely disfigured and half her head is missing. Now I'm kind of glad I didn't kill her first, she probably suffered more this way.
Rod's titan was so massive it put a hole in the ground the size of wall sina. Crystal pillars stand tall around me, holding up the earth sitting on top of them. They look exactly like those in the underground, though they're more clumped together instead of sparsely located throughout a city.
