The next few days were a blur of gym sessions, basketball practices, and an unspoken competition. Jax was everywhere — challenging him, testing his limits, pushing him harder than Ethan thought possible. At first, it was a game of endurance. Jax had him running drills that left him gasping for breath, pushing his body past the breaking point.
"Come on, Ethan!" Jax yelled as Ethan dribbled the ball down the court. "You're not here to be average! Push yourself!"
But it wasn't just physical endurance that was being tested. It was mental. Basketball wasn't just about hitting shots and running plays. It was about thinking on your feet, adapting, reacting. The seniors knew how to read the game, how to anticipate. And every time Ethan fumbled a pass or missed a shot, the pressure mounted.
On the third day of practice, Jax called him out. "Hey, newbie! You've got talent, but your head's not in the game. You're too scared to fail."
Ethan bristled at the comment, his chest tightening. "I'm not scared," he muttered, trying to brush it off. But Jax wasn't done.
"Then prove it!" Jax barked. "You've got ten seconds. Make a move or I'll bench you for the rest of practice."
The ball felt impossibly heavy in his hands. The court seemed huge, and the defense was closing in. But Ethan didn't freeze this time. He took a deep breath, and without thinking, he drove past his defender, planted his foot, and took the shot.
The gym erupted in cheers. For a moment, Ethan felt like he had conquered everything. The fear, the doubt, the pressure. He had finally broken through.
"You've got potential," Jax said, nodding with approval. "But don't get cocky. We're just getting started."
