As the days passed, Jax's behavior became more erratic. He stopped showing up for practices altogether. Ethan was left to pick up the pieces. He tried to rally the team, but it was clear they were losing their edge without Jax. The senior leadership, the driving force behind the team, was faltering.

One afternoon, after school, Ethan followed Jax to an abandoned alley behind the gym. He saw Jax talking to a group of older students — kids who were known for causing trouble.

"What's going on, Jax?" Ethan called out, stepping forward.

Jax's face hardened. "I told you, stay out of it, Ethan."

"I can't. Not when you're about to throw everything away."

"You don't get it!" Jax snapped, his fists clenched. "This is bigger than basketball. This is about survival. You don't know what it's like to be in my shoes!"

Ethan stood his ground. "I'm your friend, Jax. Let me help you."

But the anger in Jax's eyes turned to something darker. "Help me? You can't even help yourself. Stay out of my life, Ethan."

The words hit like a slap. Ethan turned and walked away, his heart heavy with the weight of Jax's betrayal.

He knew now that he couldn't save Jax. But there was still one thing he could do: he could save the team.
