The first day of high school felt like a battlefield to Ethan. The hallways were crowded with students, some who seemed to know exactly where they were going, others who wandered aimlessly. He tried to blend in — his goal was to keep his head down, get through the day, and avoid drawing attention. But that was easier said than done.
"Hey, new kid!" A loud voice boomed from behind him. Ethan froze. He turned to find a group of seniors, led by Jax Carter, the captain of the basketball team, grinning at him like he was the next target.
"What's up? You here to try out for basketball or just crash the game?" Jax smirked, tossing a basketball in the air.
Ethan hesitated. He wasn't particularly good at basketball — but something in Jax's eyes made it clear that this was a challenge he couldn't back down from.
"Sure, I'll give it a shot," Ethan said, surprising himself. His heart was racing, but the thrill of the challenge felt like a fire igniting in his chest.
The next thing he knew, he was out on the court during lunch, lined up next to Jax and a handful of other players. The gym was packed with students, the atmosphere electric. Jax tossed him the ball. Ethan dribbled, tried to look confident, but he could feel his hands trembling. When the ball came to him for a shot, he closed his eyes and released it.
The ball soared through the air and — swish. The crowd erupted.
"You've got guts, I'll give you that," Jax said, clapping him on the back. "But it's gonna take more than that to hang with us."
Ethan didn't know it then, but that moment marked the beginning of everything. That challenge, that adrenaline, lit a fire inside him. It wasn't just about basketball — it was about proving to himself that he was capable of more than he had ever imagined.
