The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of practices, gym sessions, and late-night strategy meetings. Ethan had made the JV team, and though he was still considered the underdog, he was determined to prove his worth. He and Jax became a formidable duo on the court, running drills and setting up plays that had the team talking. But Jax's leadership style was unorthodox, to say the least.

One evening, after practice, Jax pulled Ethan aside. "There's a big game this Friday," he said, his eyes narrowing. "We need to win, or else the season's done. You're going to have to step up."

Ethan swallowed hard. He had never played in a game this important before. His hands suddenly felt clammy. "I'm ready," he said, though doubt gnawed at him.

The day of the game arrived, and the gym was packed. The rivalry between Eastwood and West Valley High was legendary, and the stakes were higher than ever. The crowd was wild, the atmosphere charged with energy. Ethan could feel the weight of it all on his shoulders.

But halfway through the game, everything went wrong. In the third quarter, Jax took a hard hit to his side, crumpling to the ground in pain. The crowd gasped. Ethan stood frozen, watching as Jax writhed in pain on the floor.

"Get him off the court!" the coach yelled. "We need to finish this game."

Ethan stepped up. He wasn't ready for this, wasn't ready to lead, but there was no time to second-guess. The ball was in his hands, and the game wasn't over.

"Focus, Ethan!" Jax's voice came from the sideline, hoarse but determined. "It's all on you now!"

Ethan nodded, his body moving almost on instinct. He ran plays, passed, and shot with an intensity he didn't know he had. The game came down to the final seconds, with the score tied and the ball in Ethan's hands.

The clock ticked down. He could feel the pressure. The entire gym was watching, waiting.

Without thinking, Ethan drove to the basket, dodging defenders, and launched the ball toward the hoop. Time seemed to slow.

The gym erupted in cheers as the buzzer sounded. Ethan had won the game — and with it, earned his place on the team.
