The game was intense from the start. West Valley's team, led by their star player Alex Kline, was ruthless. They had everything — skill, speed, and coordination. Ethan and his teammates struggled to keep up, especially in the first half. Every time they seemed to catch up, West Valley pulled ahead.
Ethan found himself being pressured by Kline every time he had the ball, forcing him into bad shots and turnovers. The crowd was loud, and the tension was thick. He felt the weight of Jax's absence more than ever. Jax would've been the one to take charge, the one to find a way through the chaos. But now it was up to him.
"You've got this, Ethan!" Liam shouted from the sideline after a bad pass, giving Ethan a thumbs-up.
Ethan nodded, but his mind was racing. The score was tied at the end of the third quarter, and the pressure was mounting. They had one quarter left to turn things around. But the team seemed fragmented — no one could find a rhythm, and the defense was falling apart.
In the final minutes of the game, it came down to one possession. West Valley was up by two points, and Ethan had the ball. The clock was ticking. He could feel his heartbeat in his ears, every second stretching longer than the last. He was trapped at the top of the key, Kline on his tail, waiting for an opening. His teammates were spread out, but no one was in position for an easy shot.
Ethan hesitated for a split second, then made the decision. He faked left, spun right, and drove towards the basket, forcing his way past Kline. The defender tried to foul him, but Ethan leapt into the air, releasing the ball in a last-ditch attempt.
Swish.
The crowd erupted. Ethan had tied the game, sending it into overtime.
