"That idiot!"
I threw my phone down the grassy hill. Danielle drove us to the city line after exiting the highway. She told me that the hill she brought us to was a hill that not many people know about and is a childhood place for her. My phone lit up on the hill. The hill was already lit up by the evening sun.
I was angry in how Josh somehow got me into some conspiracy that I never had wanted to be in. I had a few missed text messages from Elena asking me if I was okay. I picked up my phone and I know replied to her several text messages.
Message to Elena,
I am okay, but Josh was captured by the terrorist group Mordecai. I will explain it all the next we meet. Just go back to your dorm or hotel and DO NOT call the police. They cannot help us now.
When I looked up from my phone I saw Danielle standing in front of the tree. Her hand was placed on the tree as she look up at the tree branches. I turned my body fully around. Why was she touching that one single tree on the top of this hill? To me this seemed like a scene in a corny romance movie.
I looked around the tree to see if anything was on it. Sure enough I saw the carved words John Eubert Johnson. Who was this John person? Is he her grandparents, or someone she knew well. I walked up behind her to looked up at the tree with her. I wondered what importance this tree had to her.
Oh yeah I forgot, "Hey Danielle, whatever happened today try not to tell or talk about it anyone. I will say this a million times before the day we leave college but here we go, I am so damn sorry for pulling you into this." I sighed as I placed my hand on her shoulder. Okay, this is a little creepy.
When I was about to take my hand off Danielle said closing her eyes, "I knew something bad will happen. I may as well be the bad luck child."
"Bad luck child?" I wondered why she said this, "Why are you calling yourself the bad luck child?"
"Because, every Halloween ever since I was born something bad happened him this town. This is year may have been the least worst in a while."
"Woah, woah, woah." I had to stop her. I do not know why but I stopped her from continuing on. I asked, "Why do you think that?"
She sighed looked down at the roots of the tree. She spoke, "Well, let's begin when I was born. Eighteen years ago, 2007. In this town on the day of October 31st 2007, the day I was born, a small incident happened to my grandfather. He burnt his hand while baking a cake for grandma."
"Okay..." I do not know where this is going.
"The next few years were small comical incidents until the Halloween when I was nine. That day," Her voice cracked, "A terrible thing happened to my brother."
Huh!? So she had a brother? Is her brother, John Eubert Johnson? I asked, "So, is your brother this John person who is carved to this tree?"
She closed her eyes. She replied, "Yes. John 'Johnny' Eubert Johnson was his name. He was six years older than me. He always sickly. In that year, 2016, be was going through the recovering stages of Leukemia. The doctor, Dr. Moore even said he was lucky to be alive."
Wow. I do not believe that Dr. Moore was that big of a doctor. It was only a small chance for my family and her family to share the same Doctor. It was weird, but what happened to her brother. It would be too rude to ask what happened to him but curiosity is right now up my ass trying to force me to ask that question.
