Talia's POV
The last thing I remember is a bright light and sirens. EMTs poking and prodding and them shining lights in my face. One was named Bailey; she was the nicest. My mom was taken in a separate car, not an ambulance, just this big dark car. I don't remember much, but I knew that I was never going to see my mom again. When I woke up, machines beeped around me and a doctor walked in.
"Can you hear me honey?"
"Yeah, I can."
She shines a light in my eyes. I feel tubes in my arm, pumping medicine into my body. My arm's in a cast, and my head aches. My wristband says that I have a concussion and a broken wrist.
"Where's my mom?" I ask, I already know the answer. But I want to make sure. It can't be true, can it?
"Oh, I'm sorry. I don't know I'm just a pediatric doctor. I can call home, or I can call the front desk for you."
"Where's my phone?" The doctor points to by bedside table. My phone sits there, the screen protecter broken into a million pieces. As I pick it up to call my mom, Lucy walks in.
"Hi Talia."
"Hi Lucy, do you know where my mom is?" Her face looks wet, blotched with tears. Her mascara is smudged and it looks like she has been crying. She's spaced out. "Lucy?"
"Oh... uhm. I think I have to tell you another day. Let's just focus on you right now."
So, maybe my mom is still alive. Maybe she's in surgery. Lucy sits down and places her stuff down on a chair.
"I'm just going to call her real quick." I tap her contact and my phone rings and rings. But it goes to voicemail.
"Lydia here, leave me what you want to tell me after the beep!"
"Mom, where are you? Call me back when you can, I miss you and I love you."
Lucy turns away, and she looks like she is going to cry. I don't know much about her, but I know that she cared about my mom.
"It's late, you should get some rest. I'll see you in the morning!"
"Wait, no! Don't leave please!" I beg her. I don't want to be alone in a hospital room.
"Okay. Fine, I'll stay here. Do you want me to get you anything from the cafeteria?"
"No, I'm not hungry." Lucy nods and she says that she'll be right back. When the door closes, I wonder where my mom is. She's probably still in the same hospital I am in. I hope she come sees me soon. I kick my sheets a bit and turn on my side. I try to sleep, but my head pounds. My head spins and I can't think right. Must be from the concussion.
Lucy's POV
As I come back from the cafeteria, I come back to a sleeping Talia. I try to be as quiet as I can. I need to text Celina.
Celina, can you pack me a bag of clothes for a few days? Make sure to pack a blanket and some instant coffee. Drop off at Shaw Memorial, pediatric wing, room 808.
Sure, but why? Is this something to do with Grey's office?
Yeah, Lydia passed and now I'm Talia's temporary guardian. Maybe just until they find a family member. But Lydia had no intermediate family. I think I'll take her in. It depends. I might have to ask for a few more days off. Grey gave me a few days already tho.
If anyone asks why I'm gone, just say that I got the stomach bug.
Course, on my way, ETA 20 mins
Also, don't let the detectives find out. I'd like to tell everybody in person.
I feel terrible for Talia. Her dad she never knew, and her mom was the only family member she has. I need to find a way to tell someone that their mom died. I could ask the detectives, but that would just make them suspicious. Half of my heart shattered to pieces; I can't break Talia's.
