San Diego ComiCon - that's where I would be heading in the next 24 hours with my best friend, Charlotte. My first convention and first time travelling to America; what better way to start than going to one of the most popular conventions in the world, and in a place I had never been to before! I had no idea what to expect, and hadn't a clue who would be there; Charlotte had been to conventions before and so knew what would be going on, just not to one this big; I had an inkling though, that she wanted to go for something - or someone, rather - more than one of her favourite TV shows though, and this someone's name was Markiplier.
"Just one more video before we set off, pleeeease?" Charlotte begged and gave me the puppy-dog look, triggering a playful eye-roll in response and a nod from me. She clapped her hands together and loaded up Youtube, searching for her favourite sketch - Sexy Mark. As soon as it started, I placed my suitcase down and couldn't help joining her on the bed in front of the laptop and smiling as Mark took his shirt off. Granted, I wasn't as big a fan as Charlotte, who was now fixated on the screen, but had watched a few of his videos before and agreed that he was a decent Youtuber, and he did make me laugh with his rather loud reactions and jokes.
"Right, can we get going now?" I chuckled at my friend that seemed to be in a daze, despite watching the video numerous times before. "Earth to Charlotte!" I shook my head, still laughing, and clapped my hands to get her attention, finally getting Charlotte to shut the laptop down before turning to face me.
"Yes, we can!" She placed the laptop carefully at the top of my wardrobe and exited the bedroom, shutting the door behind her. "Sorry, but Maaaarkkkkkkk..." She trailed off, and I shook my head with a smile once more.
"I know, I know, he's beautiful and not bad physique-wise. Now, do you wanna get to California or not?" I asked, earning a gentle shove on the shoulder from Charlotte as we stepped out of the flat, locking the door behind us.

"Have you got everything: passports, tickets, US currency?" Charlotte's mum panicked, earning a slight eye roll from Charlotte and a giggle from me. Both our parents had generously offered to accompany us to the airport, to say their goodbyes again – probably a tearful one knowing my mum.
"We have, Janet, thank you!" I interrupted before Charlotte could make a sarcastic comment to her mum, like she usually did if she panicked.
I noticed my mum wipe a sly tear away in the corner of my eye and smiled – she was never any good when I went away with my friends, even though I didn't actually live with her anymore.
"Oh, mum!" I walked over and hugged her briefly, knowing that if I held on for too long she would start pretty much bawling her eyes out. "Shall we get going then? Save the tears for the airport!" I smiled at her, passing her a tissue from the box on the kitchen counter. With that, we started to pack all our luggage into the car and got ourselves ready to start our journey of a lifetime.
*
"Let us know when you get there." My mum sniffled, earning a squeeze on the shoulders from my dad.
"Of course we will, but we sure as hell won't be ringing you from America! I'll need to get used to the time zones as well." I laughed and slightly rolled my eyes as Charlotte's mum started to cry as well.
"Right!" Dad let go of mum to stand beside her. "We'll leave you two to it. Have a good time and be careful!" He smiled before both men practically steered their tearful wives away, leaving us waving goodbye as they moved away.
Charlotte sat down on one of the benches behind. "Well, talk about sad goodbyes! Anyone would think we were leaving forever!" We both laughed and ran a hand through my hair, which had no particular style that day.
I looked at the clock above our heads and stood up, hitching my bag up on my shoulder. "Okay, so we have a few hours and I have a bit of cash with me, but I don't want to spend too much. You wanna check in then go look round the shops?" Charlotte nodded and we walked arm-in-arm to go and check in.

"Did they just call our flight? I'm sure they did!" Charlotte had started panicking, even though we'd been very organised with our time; I smiled as I acknowledged that panicking was her strange way of showing excitement in terms of flying and holidays abroad.
"Relax, Charlotte – we're fine. We've plenty of time, and it's not as if we're far from the gate now." She looked at me across the table with a worried look. "I'm excited too, but if you start to panic, things will go wrong and we'd both like to avoid that!"
A few coffees and snacks later, we were ready to leave. Hearing our flight actually be called did send Charlotte into a bit of a panic down, but I calmed her with a rub of the shoulders and a reassuring hug; with that, we pretty much skipped towards the gate, making sure our boarding passes were at hand so we could go straight on.
Our tickets were checked and we walked down the spacious tunnel and onto the plane, feeling more excited by the minute and trying to contain our squeals when we finally sat down in our assigned seats.
"So, this is it – I can't wait!" I laughed and Charlotte turned to me, a slightly serious expression on her face. "No, seriously, I don't think I can." She bounced in her seat and I put my hand on her leg.
"You can, and you will. Time will be as quick as a flash, and before we know it, we'll be away from rainy England and touching down in sunny America!" I smiled and she nodded, adjusting herself into a more comfortable position in her seat as the plane started to fill up.
