Chapter 1- Introduction

Hey guys! I'm Sarah Cade and I am Johnny Cade's sister! Yup that's right I'm related to the Johnny Cade! The one that killed Bob! I'll tell you about myself! I'm kinda short, 5' 1".. I'm thin, I have long, medium blonde hair, greyish green eyes, I don't really wear a lot of makeup, unlike most girls.. Haha, anyway, unlike my brother, but I have tanned skin, and I love to read, write, hang with my buddies and I'm tomboyish. I'm 14, 15 in a few weeks. But my life is rough... Like really rough. As you know, Johnny's parents are abusive.. Of course, since I'm his sister, he's not the only one they abuse. He takes the fall for me most times, but I hate when he does that. We're really close, and I'd do anything for him. Ever since Johnny got home from the hospital from his near death experience, he's been homeschooled with me. He says "It's the best way to keep safe." But everyday, he goes over to some friends house house. He would never let me go thought, because they're in a gang, and he doesn't want me to not be able to fit it with them. Uggh. The only place I'm aloud to go is the park, and even then Johnny has to come with. That is unless my best friend, Chris comes with. No no I know what you're thinking, we're dating. Nope! He's gay. ~Sarah's Point of View~

I woke up on a sunny Saturday, birds were singing, sun was shining, but I couldn't get up. Cause mom and dad are home. If I go down there, they're gonna hit me. I know it. Johnny's dead asleep in our shared King sized mattress. He was still dead asleep. I heard the door slam and a car rip out of the driveway. "Yes, this is the perfect time to get some breakfast." I somehow escaped Johnny's python grip. I started down the stairs, and knew something was wrong. I swore I saw my dad sitting on the chair, which he normally does, but I thought I was seeing things. So I kept going. I got to the kitchen and took out a frying pan and some eggs. I set the pan on the stove, and starting cracking eggs into it as it got hot. I heard someone coming, thinking it was Johnny, I didn't pay any attention to it. Then I turned around. "Ahh, finally decided to do something useful did yah? Finally decided to try and be something? Ha well a little weakling like you trying to cook. No one cares about you! Your just a waste of space not even your brother cares, he just acts like he does cause he's scared of me. Haha.. Here I'll help you, you little worthless piece of crap." *Gulp* I stood back to the cupboard, and I reached my hand back, scrambling to find something to defend myself with. Shit why didn't I believe my eyes. Ugh.. I never use my head.. He grabbed my by my shirt and threw me into the wall. I knocked down a picture of dogs playing poker. He grabbed a baseball bat , and started hitting me with it. Hard. "Johnny! Help!" Was all I remember before I noticed someone coming down the stairs, and he knocked me out cold.

~Johnny's Point of View~

I heard banging downstairs, I thought it was Sarah knocking around pots and pans and thought nothing of it. Then.. BANG! And then "Johnny! Help!" I knew something was up. I grabbed my shirt, favourite jean jacket, and my switch. As I came down the stairs, all I seen was Sarah look at me so hurt eyes and black out. "Ooh.. Two in 10 minutes.. A new record." I looked to Sarah then to Dad who kept coming closer to me. "Why don't you just leave us alone you asshole?!" I screamed. "It's not my fault mom doesn't love you and you're both dangerous when you've got a drink in you!" I knew it was a mistake as soon as I said it. Sarah was starting to stir. I looked to her, I motioned her to run, but she just came to help me. Dad grabbed me and threw me into the TV smashing it into bits and pieces. Damn.. This is the maddest I've seen her. She grabbed her switch from her pocket put it on dad's throat. I got up on his back and pulled him to the ground with whatever strength I had left. I ran upstairs, to get our things. I wasn't coming back here..I'd stay at the lot before that happened. "Johnny?! What the hell?" 'Trust me' I mouthed she grabbed the lamp. Just as I went over the seeing point.. If that's what you call it.. I got the cardboard box we used as a bedside table, and piled our clothes, and other things into it. By then Sarah came in panting. "What happened?"

~Sarah's Point of View~

I took the lamp and bashed it over dads head. This knocked him out cold. How's it feel? Huh? I stuck my tongue out and started upstairs. "We've only got couple minutes." I said, and I ran as fast as I possibly could, I ran to mine and Johnny's room and he was packing our things. "What's wrong?" He asked with concern in his voice. I ran over to him, hugging him tight. My arms went around his neck, and his around my waist. I snuggled my face into his chest. "Johnny?" "Yes Sare Bear?" (That was his nickname for me.) "I hit him in the head with a lamp, he's knocked out, but I don't know for how long." He released his grip from he. He kissed the top of my head, and told me to be careful, and run to take the box outside. Did I mention that I'm an amazing runner? I ran outside and stood under an old oak tree until Johnny came out. We walked down the street, silently. We ended up to the lot. We sat down and made a little fire and warmed up. "Hey Johnnycake? Can I ask you somethin'?" "Sure sis, what's up?" He said looking at me. I looked down, "Uhm, do you only pretend to care for me because your scared of dad?" "No way!" He said "You're one of the only things I love, and I'd trust you with anything. Your the best thing that's happened to me. Without you I don't know what I'd do." "Thanks Johnnycakes! I said pulling him into a hug. We fell asleep after a while, feeling safe and secure in eachother's arms.
