Monday came around quickly and soon enough Taylor found herself gathering all of the students into a circle with their stuffed animals. As always Harper hesitated however this time instead of finding a space she turned around and headed to her desk. Taylor looked over and noticed the poor girl was crying at her desk so she told the class to talk amongst themselves while she headed over.
"What's wrong honey?" She whispered, crouching down by Harper. The small girl looked up, tears glistening in her eyes.
"I don't have a stuffed animal. Daddy didn't want me to get attached." She whispered. Taylor gave her a small smile and tilted her head up a little so that Harper was looking in her eyes. She gently wiped away Harper's tears. "I have one that you can use." She whispered back.
Harper nodded a little and Taylor held out a hand for the small girl which Harper took immediately. Taylor walked her over to the circle and sat down, telling Harper to sit by her. The small girl sat down but sat half behind Taylor and half next to her. She hated circle time because she hated having to talk with everyone else.
Taylor passed the small teddy bear over to Harper who thanked her then hugged it close to her. Taylor smiled and turned to everyone else. "Okay so what we will do is go around and you're going to tell everyone your stuffed animal's name and how long you've had it for." Taylor told them all.
She started with the person to her right and listened to each one. She wanted to give Harler enough time to think of something and as it came closer she looked at the small girl. "Say you've had it since you were a baby." She whispered, pointing to the bear.
As it got to Harper the entire class started talking over each other and showing their toys to each other. Taylor noticed Harper slowly moving behind her, losing her confidence of speaking. "Hands on top." Taylor said confidently and talking over the class while placing her hands on her head.
"Everybody stop." The class replied, putting their hands on their heads. "Okay good, thank you. We aren't done so everyone please get back into the circle and listen to Harper speak. She didn't get her turn and she's been very respectful and listened to everyone else." Taylor told them all, now using a more stern tone.
They all scurried back to their places and Taylor reached behind her to guide Harper into the circle. When she noticed how nervous the poor girl was she tapped the space in front of her. Harper hesitantly shuffled in front of Taylor and held back smiles when she felt herself being lifted into Taylor's lap.
"Who's this Harper?" Taylor asked her.
"Billy." Harper mumbled.
"What a lovely name. How long have you had him for?" Taylor added. Harper started to go bright red when she noticed someone laughing and just looked down instead of answering the last question. Taylor immediately shot the boy a look.
"James. Do not make me send you to the silly student corner." Taylor warned. She could already tell from the first few weeks that Harper was a sensitive child, Very shy and hated when she had to talk to more than a handful of people at once.
Taylor waited for a response from Harper but got nothing. The longer the silence lasted the more Harper looked down and shied away so she moved on. "This one I don't want you to answer if you don't feel comfortable doing so but why is your bear so special to you? James you can go last for being disrespectful so we will start with Jacob then go around and finish with James. Off you go Jacob." Taylor smiled.
The class went around and told her their stories behind their stuffed animals. After a few minutes Taylor noticed Harper, who was still in her lap, had started fidgeting quite a lot. She could already tell what that meant so she gently tapped Harper on the shoulder.
"Do you need to go to the bathroom?"Taylor asked her quietly and subtly. Harper turned to look at Taylor and nodded slowly. Taylor gave her the nod to say that she could go and watched as she got up and headed to the bathroom. While Harper was gone her turn ended up being missed however Taylor didn't think that Harper really wanted to talk anyway.
Harper came back and stood outside of the circle, noticing there was no room for her. Taylor gently guided her back around. "Where do you want to sit honey? You can sit with me or you can sit next to me up to you." Taylor told her. Harper pointed to Taylor so was gently guided into Taylor's lap.
Taylor felt Harper slowly lean back against her. "Harper, before James has his turn, would you like to go?" Taylor offered. Harper slowly shook her head. James immediately laughed.
"Scaredy cat." He muttered.
"James. You have had enough warning now. Go out your name on the yellow please." Taylor told him, pointing to the traffic lights system in her room. He sighed and got up, rolling his eyes and going over to the coloured circles arranged in order of gold, green, yellow and red. All students started on green.
"You can put yourself in red for the attitude." Taylor added. James looked down and put himself on red before returning back to the circle and having his turn. Taylor also made him apologize and Harper accepted the apology.
At the end of the day Taylor handed James his red slip before sending everyone off outside to their parents. Once she saw Travis she singled for him to come over. Once all of the children were with the right people she took him back to her classroom and placed her hand on Harper's back.
"We've had a bit of an emotional day today. Haven't we honey?" Taylor asked Harper who looked down and nodded a little. "I just wanted to let you know that we had a few tears today and she's been quite quiet and shy. We also had a bit of an issue with another student upsetting her but I just thought I'd let you know that he was dealt with." Taylor told him.
Travis looked her in the eyes, almost getting lost for a moment before nodding and stepping closer. Taylor breathed in, pausing as she looked him in the eyes. "You really care about her don't you?" Travis whispered, stepping closer to Taylor.
He hadn't even come across someone who loved his daughter, not just him and he could tell that Taylor was interested. Mostly from how red her cheeks had gotten and how she looked at him.
"Of course I do." Taylor replied, her voice also a whisper. Travis gently placed his hand on Taylor's cheek, stepping closer before moving it to her jaw, promoting her to close her mouth. "You'll be catching flies in there." He whispered.
"I'll see you tomorrow Taylor." He told her. He knew that the parent teacher conference was coming up the following day and he couldn't wait to get a moment with Taylor alone, no child. "See then, Kelce. And it's Miss Swift when you're in my classroom." She replied.
Harper held up the bear to Taylor, trying to return it but Taylor knelt down in front of her. "You keep it sweetie." She told her gently. Harper smiled and hugged Taylor, getting a tight and comforting hug back.
Travis watched in silence. She desperately wanted Taylor to be his not just for himself but also for Harper. He knew Taylor is the kind of person who Harper needs.
