Chapter Two
Reece
It's been three days, and I still haven't been able to get her out of my head. As a matter of fact, I've been fantasying about her by day and dreaming about her by night, and the worst part of it all is that my wolf, Kyla, was also obsessed with her.
What's so special about her, I've thought, but found nothing. She's only but another cheap she wolf who would go any height to get the attention of a male, especially one of high ranking, large wallet, and power. I've met a lot of wolves like her in the past, and I never even spared them a thought, so why was it so hard to get this particular wolf out of my head?
Maybe because her face was hidden in the darkness and I didn't even get her name. Yes, that should be it.
'Just admit it, you fell in love at first sight.' Kyla squealed, and I instantly choked on my breath.
Love?
I call that bullshit. I'd probably google up the meaningless four-letter words if I didn't have such a huge ego.
Love was a word I detested more than any other thing in the world; it was like a hunting game in my ears. For all I knew, love was a ridiculous feeling that made people stupid and vulnerable. Take my mom as an example; my dad had died in a battle, and since then she's been only a shell of her previous self.
At first it started as a minor illness, and soon it escalated to the point where she couldn't even move, talk, or eat. She's just numb. Probably the same as dead, but I refuse to believe that. As long as she's breathing, there's hope.
Seeing my mother's broken state every day shattered me greatly, especially when I went all out of my way to gather money and treat her, only for the doctors to say her illness was incurable. Love ruined my mother, and seeing her every day, I realized I didn't want to ever be like her—weak, vulnerable, and in love.
"Hey bro, what's up? Alpha Darren is awaiting your presence in the living room." Ryker my beta rasped as he sat on the chair opposite my desk. I starred at him blankly, wondering how he entered my office without me even noticing.
'How would you have noticed when you were too busy fantasying about your lover?'. Kyla squealed, and I instantly blocked him out. This was all so unreal; I didn't even notice Ryker's presence because I was thinking about her. Fuck, I was still thinking about her.
"Reece". Ryker called out, narrowing his gaze at me. Apart from my family, Ryker was the only person I permitted to call me by my name, and that's because he wasn't just my beta but my best friend. We've been best friends since childhood and did all our training together.
"You said Darren is waiting for me. Let's go hear what he has to say." I growled, rising from my seat, as I headed straight to the door. Ryker trailed closely behind me; if he thought anything about my sudden outburst, he didn't say it.
"Reece my boy." Darren called out as I reached the living room. Darren was about twenty years older than me, but I disliked him and had no respect for him. Our packs had been enemies even before I was born. My grandfather died fighting his pack, and even my father was killed during a battle against the Obsidian Pack.
"And to what do I owe this Visit Den?" I asked, purposely referring to him by his nickname, to get a rise out of him because I knew how much he hated when people do that.
"Oh Reece, get ahold of yourself and stop acting like I would normally visit you; even the goddess knows I didn't want to be here." He snapped, as a smirk curled along my lips. It was good to know I infuriated him as much as he infuriated me.
"So why exactly are you here? Did you come to spy my pack?".
"Oh no, I have men that do that. I'm here because we both have a common goal: to capture the shapeshifter demon and destroy him. We've been trying to do that individually for the past years and couldn't succeed. The shapeshifter demon killed five of my pack members yesterday. I felt if we worked together as the two strongest pack, we could bring down the demon. What do you say?".
"Anything to get that monster down, but don't think my relationship with you was going to change.".
Darren let out a harsh chuckle.
"Speaking of relationships, I want you to marry my daughter Evelyn as your chosen mate, and in exchange, I will team with you to defeat the shapeshifter demon.".
I starred at Darren in confusion. He wanted me to agree to marry his daughter before he could help defeat the shapeshifter demon. A ruthless killer who normally sneaked into various packs in different forms, hiding his scent and killing innocent wolves.
Killing the shapeshifter demon was for the good of all werewolves alive. So why force me to accept a marriage deal before he could team with me to defeat the ruthless demon?
"Greetings Alpha. We just found Ethan's corpse by the boundary. His heart was ripped off and his eyes were plucked out." Jeremy, the head warrior, mindlinked me as I clenched my fists tightly, anger boiling inside me.
Ethan was my gamma, and after Ryker, came Ethan. From the description Jeremy had just given, it was obvious the shapeshifter demon was the person responsible for Ethan's death.
Taking a deep breath, I knew exactly what I needed to do next.
"I accept your offer." I breathed out; even the words didn't sound right on my lips, marrying a girl, despite my promise to remain celibate.
Darren let out a proud grin. "I knew you would accept. I have made preparations for another mating ball and sent invites to all other alpha's. My daughter would be there, and I would formally introduce you to her.".
