Chapter Four
Sophie
To say the drive to the ball wasn't far will be a massive understatement. It was about a two-hour drive that felt like eternity.
Honestly, we could have been faster in our wolf form, but Aurora insisted that it would be inconveniening to shift back, and I might even ruin her beautiful makeup on my face.
As we approached the double iron gate that led to the ball ground, The guards by the gate hurriedly opened the gate after confirming our identities.
"Lucas told me, this is one of Alpha Darren's many houses." Aurora murmured as she turned the steering and curved the tire towards the packing lot. It was just twenty minutes into the ball, and the packing lot was already filled up.
"Gosh. There isn't any space left. I will be reversing the car to pack outside while you go in and enjoy yourself. I will mindlink you once I'm back." She rasped, flashing me a reassuring smile, which I quickly returned, before stepping out of the passenger seat and watching the car speed off.
I stared at the large building before me. The building was exceptionally beautiful and perfectly maintained. The definition of a picturesque, opulent mansion. There wasn't a leaf out of place on the shrubbery or a speck of dirt on the marble walkways.
It couldn't be more flawless, but there is something so lonesome about it that's almost palpable. It doesn't feel like there has been any happiness here for a long time. It's like an invisible fog hanging in the air, weighing everything down, blocking out the sun.
The ball was in full swing when I strode in. Pointing sharp glances around the colorful room, I decided to settle for an empty sofa along the bar.
A man cloaked in black and dragging a young lady through the crowd was the first thing I caught sight of.
'Why would anyone wear black to a mating ball?' My wolf, Myra, murmured as the inquisitive part of me sprung out, and I instantly rose to my feet, following behind them from a safe distance.
"You have to marry him, Evelyn." The husked male voice growled once they were finally outside. My blood ran cold. I'd heard that voice before.
"But I don't love him, father." The female cried out, choking on her saliva.
"It doesn't matter, darling; the wedding has already been fixed. It's taking place this same time next week at our residence. All you need to do is marry him, and then I will equip you with poisons to kill him. Once he's dead, I will rule over his pack and hand over the Obsidian pack to you and your lover." I shook my head as I stepped backwards, tears feeling my eyes.
This was Alpha Darren, the man who killed my parents, and now he wanted to kill another Alpha. What for power?
No, I couldn't let this happen. I'd been sending trained watchers to attack Darren ever since he killed my parents, but all their attempts always ended up futile.
Darren was a strong force, and if he planned on killing another Alpha to gain power and take over his pack, it only meant the other Alpha was much stronger. And to defeat a strong force like Darren, I needed the help of a stronger Alpha.
My plan was simple. The wedding was this same time next week at Darren's residence, and the only way I could meet this stronger Alpha and ask for his help was by attending the wedding and making a quick swap with his bride.
I just hope it won't be too late.
