—The Great Hall buzzed with the lively hum of chatter, the clinking of cutlery against plates, and the occasional burst of laughter from one of the house tables. The enchanted ceiling above mirrored the night sky—ink-black with shimmering stars, a waxing crescent moon hanging low. The golden glow from the countless floating candles bathed the students in a warm, flickering light.
Jamie picked at her roasted chicken, her mind drifting as she glanced around the hall. The Ravenclaw table was a picture of order and discussion—students swapping theories about next week's Charms test, others debating over which enchanted book series was better. She loved being among her housemates, but tonight, her attention wasn't on their animated debates.
Across the hall, at the Slytherin table, sat Al-Baydah, her older sister. Jamie's gaze naturally gravitated to her. She was laughing at something—a sharp, melodious laugh—but her onyx eyes eyes suddenly shifted and locked onto Jamie's.
The two sisters exchanged a knowing look, their laughter subsiding into something more private. Al-Baydah quirked an eyebrow, and Jamie responded with a subtle shake of her head, her lips twitching in a smile. It was their secret language, a bond forged long before Hogwarts had sorted them into rival houses.
Jamie could still remember their shared moments at home—how they used to sneak out of bed late at night to steal sweets from the pantry or scare each other with ghost stories. Their sibling telepathy, as they jokingly called it, had always been a source of wonder. Now, with an entire hall between them and house loyalties drawing an invisible line, that connection was more precious than ever.

Flashback: The Sorting Hat
—Jamie's mind wandered to the day they had been sorted. She had been trembling with nerves, clutching Al-Baydah's hand so tightly that her sister had winced.
"Don't worry," Al-Baydah had whispered. "We'll be together. No matter what."
But the Sorting Hat had had other plans. When it was Al-Baydah's turn, the hat barely touched her head before declaring, "Slytherin!" The Slytherin table had erupted into cheers as she confidently strode over to join them. Jamie remembered how her heart buzzed with happiness, because her older sister finally made her own decision.
Their parents had always joked that Jamie was the studious one, with her nose perpetually buried in books, while Al-Baydah was the strategist, always thinking three steps ahead. The sorting had only affirmed what they had already known. But it had also marked the beginning of a divide that neither of them had expected.
Back in the present, Jamie sighed and tore her gaze away from her sister. She took a sip of pumpkin juice, her mind still on Al-Baydah. Their bond had remained strong despite their house differences.
