We Meet Again
““““Gooooood morning Ma~am Iris~”””” everyone greets our homeroom adviser as she walks in the room.
“Take your seat,” Ma'am Iris says without changes in her intonation.
This is Ma'am Iris. She's well-known for her aloofness and cold demeanor. Students, and even teachers rather not interact with her.
If it's not job related, she'll just ignore you. She makes you feel unimportant.
She rarely initiates conversation and speaks only when necessary, always brief and to the point, making her seem reserved and unapproachable.
Her noble presence is emphasized by her long silver hair and piercing ice-blue eyes that show no emotion. Ma'am Iris isn't one to express feelings, and in the two months since the school year started, I've yet to witness any emotion from her. My interactions with her are limited to the classroom, where she maintains a professional distance.
Right now, my classmates are all in their assigned seats because it’s Ma’am Iris. The seating is in alphabetical but the boys are stuck between two girls, supposedly to balance the class and prevent chaos. Ironically, the girls can be just as noisy, if not more so. Yet, at this moment, a strange silence fills the room.
I can't help but chuckle, “Fufu.” I was giggling silently. But the room is too peaceful that such noise is very audible.
Ma'am Iris looks at me in the eye, “What's so funny Mr. Reverren? Want to share it in front of the class?”
Everyone turns their eyes on me. I can see some of them holding back their laughter.
I stand up, saying, “Sorry Ma'am but I doubt we have the time for that.”
“Don't worry. We're all fine letting you speak for one hour. So please do,” Ma'am sits down on her seat waiting for me calmly with no signs of anger nor irritation.
“I'm sorry Ma'am Iris.” I'll just apologize.
“So you don't want to share it?” she asks.
“N—” I was about to say no but Mary speaks up for me, “Ma'am! Can you please let this slide. Mark-kun is just really mischievous.”
But I don't think Ma'am will listen.
She glances at Mary before speaking, “Sit down Mr. Reverren and behave.”
Oh. It worked? But I bet she simply lets me off because she doesn't really want to waste time on my antics.
But thanks anyway, Mary.
“Thank you po ma'am,” Mary sits back after thanking Ma'am Iris with a happy smile.
You're really like a sun Mary fufufu.
Mary is maybe short and petite. But her eyes are like those of a sun. Bright and passionate.
I give her a thumbs up and Mary just smiles back at me while shaking her head lightly.
Ma'am Iris stands up to say, “I have some news for you. You will meet a new classmate today. She transferred from Manila. I hope you all get along with her.”
Everyone lets a soft ‘Oh~’ sound but immediately silenced themselves.
I wonder who it is?
Whatever. I don't really care.
“I'll go get her.” Ma'am checks on her phone before leaving. A moment later, she's back with a short girl following behind her.
I can't see her face but I don't know why I feel weird in my chest.
