October 3rd, 2020. The clock had just struck 1:00 AM when Ananya's world came crashing down. She was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep, when the muffled sounds of her parents talking in the next room broke through the silence. The tone of their voices was low and heavy—full of sorrow.

Moments later, there was a knock on her door. Her mother, Priya, stepped in, her face pale, her eyes brimming with tears. Ananya sat up, her heart racing. She already knew, deep down, what her mother was going to say, but she wasn't ready to hear it.

"Beta," Priya whispered, her voice trembling, "Dadu is gone."

For a moment, the world seemed to stop. Ananya felt the words hit her like a wave, knocking the air out of her lungs. Her grandfather—her Dadu, the one who had always been her anchor in times of chaos—was gone.

The tears came fast and uncontrollably. She sobbed into her pillow, clutching it tightly as though it could absorb her pain. The room seemed to close in around her, suffocating her with memories of her grandfather's laughter, his warm hugs, his reassuring words.

For two days, she stayed locked in her room, refusing to come out. Her mother left food outside her door, but Ananya barely touched it. She couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't think of anything except the fact that she hadn't been able to say goodbye.

Ananya's Thoughts

He's gone. Just like that. I didn't even get to see him one last time. I didn't hold his hand, didn't tell him how much I love him. I can't even see his face... not even his lifeless body. How is that fair?

The thought of his final moments haunted her. Was he scared? Did he feel alone? She imagined him lying in the cold hospital room, his family kept away by the cruel realities of the pandemic. And she hated herself for not being there.

When she finally emerged from her room, her face was swollen, her eyes red and puffy. The house was quiet, even emptier than before. Her parents tried to comfort her, but their own grief was palpable. The absence of her grandfather loomed like a shadow over every corner of the house.

The rituals were completed without her. Due to the restrictions, Ananya wasn't allowed to see his body or attend the funeral. That reality crushed her the most. The closure she so desperately needed was stolen from her.

Days turned into weeks, but the pain didn't fade. Even in the present, whenever Ananya thought of her grandfather, the tears came unbidden. She missed him in the smallest moments—when she sat by the window, when she tried to focus on her classes, when she looked at the chessboard they used to play on together.

Her prayers continued, but now they were for his peace, for his soul to find rest in the heavens. And sometimes, late at night, she whispered to the stars, hoping he could hear her.

Ananya's Present Thoughts

They say time heals all wounds, but how can it heal this? How do you move on from losing someone who was your everything? I still feel his presence, his warmth, in the quiet moments. I still hear his voice, even if it's just in my memories. And I still cry, because some losses you never truly recover from.

Her grandfather may have left the world, but he hadn't left her heart. In her quietest moments, Ananya still held on to the fragments of his love and the lessons he had taught her. Even through the tears, she promised herself she would carry his legacy forward.

And so, her journey continued—with the weight of her loss, but also with the unshakable bond she would forever share with her Dadu.
