Bruce and Tony spent hours over the next day finishing the machine and making the suits for the team's protection. Natasha watched as Bruce explained time travel to Rhodey and Scott.
"Time Travel suit's not bad," Rhodey said.
Bruce nodded in thanks as he put the Pym Particles in Scott's suit without any difficulties.
"We got enough for one round-trip each," Scott explained to the group about the particles. "That's it. No do overs. Plus two test runs."
Then Scott accidently pushed a button, shrinking him, then making him grow back. "One test run," he said. "Alright. I'm not ready for this."
"I'm game," Clint said. Natasha turned to see him leaning against the doorway. "I'll do it."
Clint put his suit on, then Bruce explained, "Clint, now you're gonna feel a little discombobulated from the chronoshift. Don't worry about that."
"Wait a second," Rhodey said. "Let me ask you something. If we can do this, you know go back in time, why don't we just find baby Thanos? You know and..."
Rhodey made a rope and strangling motion with his hands, appalling everyone one in the room.
"No," Bruce and Natasha said at the same time.
"It's Thanos," Rhodey replied.
"Time travel doesn't work that way," Bruce said patiently. "Changing the past doesn't change the future."
"Look, we go back, we get the stones before Thanos gets them, Thanos doesn't have the stones," Scott interjected. "Problem solved."
"Bingo," Clint said.
"That's not how it works," Nebula said.
"That's not what I heard," Clint rebutted.
"By who," Bruce asked, confused.
"'Star Trek', 'Terminator,' 'Timecop,' 'Time After Time,'" Rhodey said, listing names of TV shows and films.
"Quantum Leap," Scott added.
"'Wrinkle in Time,' 'Somewhere in Time,'" Rhodey continued. "'Hot Tub Time Machine,' 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.' Basically every movie that deals with time travel."
"'Die Hard,'" Scott said. "No, that's not one. 'Doctor Who!'"
"This is known," Rhodey said.
Bruce looked at everyone with confusion and irritation then said, "If you travel in the past, you can't change the future, but instead create an alternate timeline. If we are careful and I mean very careful, then we won't create an alternate universe. If I were to go back in time and prevent a major event from happening, it would just create another reality. But what we're doing is simply getting the stones then bringing them back, which won't change anything."
"Exactly," Nebula said.
"So 'Back to the Future' is a bunch of bull," Scott asked.
Bruce rubbed his face with his hands and looked tiredly at Natasha, who gave him a sympathetic smile.
Once Clint was on the machine, Bruce gave him instructions as everyone watched eagerly.
"Alright, Clint," Bruce said as he typed a few things into the machine. "We're going in three, two, one."
Clint disappeared, then was back a few seconds later. He came back and landed on the ground, and Natasha ran up to help him.
"You okay," she asked him.
When he stood up, Clint looked at the baseball glove he was holding and smiled as he said, "It worked."
Natasha looked at Bruce and smiled, then ran up and hugged him. He lifted her off the ground for a few seconds, then she pressed her forehead to his.
"Aww," the others chorused.
"This is going to work," Natasha told Bruce.
They knew what was coming, but all that mattered was getting everyone back.
Note: It always bothered me that they never made a "Doctor Who" reference, so I added it to this chapter.
