Chapter Six

Qin Peng's reaction puzzled others. Qiu Su brought paper and pen over, looking puzzled as she asked, "Master, what are you doing?"

Qin Peng did not explain to them. He raised his pen and said to the steward beside him, "If Wei Yan returns, who would normally be left to guard the border?"

"It would be Wei Nan," Steward Wei Chun said, feeling puzzled. Qin Peng immediately wrote out the situation and instructed Wei Nan to prepare five thousand troops secretly and rush to Xuanjing. He told Wei Chun, "Deliver this letter to Wei Nan immediately!"

After that, Qin Peng got up and went to the old lady's room. The old lady was taking medicine. When she saw Qin Peng rushing in, she smiled and asked, "What's troubling you so much?"

"Mother, does the Wei family have any available hidden guards?" Qin Peng asked directly, without waiting for the old lady to inquire, and continued, "It seems like trouble is brewing for my younger uncle!"

The old lady's face turned cold. Wei Yan was the only son of the Wei family now. No matter who was in trouble, it couldn't be him. She pushed the medicine bowl away and spoke firmly, "What exactly is going on?"

Qin Peng explained the situation with the letter in detail. The old lady listened with confusion. "Are you saying someone is impersonating us and sending letters to Yan? So what?"

"Mother, do you realize the current situation? The sixteenth prince has not ascended the throne yet. I am the sister of the sixteenth prince. Who is his biggest support?"

"It's Yan," the old lady understood, "Are you saying that Shuhuai wants to kill Yan? If Yan dies, you and the new emperor will lose your support, becoming puppets from then on. Moreover, it eliminates the biggest rival. Is that what you mean?"

"Yes," Qin Peng nodded. "Now that the situation in the south has stabilized, there is no longer a need for my younger uncle as a military general. And with the chaos in the capital, Shuhuai's troops stationed in Xuanjing, if my younger uncle goes to Xuanjing, it's like a lamb to the slaughter. Shuhuai wouldn't miss such a rare opportunity. If my younger uncle is not killed today, Xuanjing will no longer have Shuhuai's dominance. If Shuhuai wants to kill my younger uncle later, it will be much harder."

"You make a good point," the old lady nodded. "What about now? He wouldn't just kill Yan in the capital!"

"It's not possible in the capital. There are too many eyes and ears, and Shuhuai, as the son of the Jing Emperor, already has a bad reputation. If he openly kills my younger uncle, it will only lead to more gossip. He might do it on the way to the capital."

"Alright," the old lady took out a token from under the pillow and said to Qin Peng, "There are five hundred soldiers in the mansion. Take them with you! Saving people is the priority!"

"There's no rush now. We might have to wait a few days. Mother, you rest first. I'll arrange the rest."

After that, Qin Peng and Steward Wei Chun exchanged a few more words to comfort the old lady before Qin Peng took the token and went to find Wei Chun.

Wei Chun led Qin Peng to meet the mansion's soldiers. The Wei family's soldiers were all elite fighters who had seen battle, capable of fighting ten men in Jingjing. Qin Peng looked around and was quite satisfied. After exchanging a few words of encouragement with the soldiers, she returned to her room.

Back in her room, Qin Peng felt her mind empty out. She realized she had done what she could, but she still didn't know what to do.

To save Wei Yan, she needed to know which route he would take to the capital. There were three routes to enter the capital, and she didn't know where Shuhuai would strike.
