The evening air was cool as Gianna stood in front of Hana's house, her heart racing with anticipation. It had been weeks since she and Hana had officially gotten together, and now, for the first time, Gianna was going to meet Hana's parents. The idea of it made her nervous—she wanted to make a good impression, to show Hana's family how much she cared about their daughter, but she was also terrified of messing it up.
She adjusted the hem of her jacket and took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. Her mind kept spinning through possible scenarios—what if they didn't like her? What if she said the wrong thing? What if she was awkward and they thought she wasn't good enough for their daughter?
Gianna's thoughts were interrupted when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She spun around to see Hana standing there, a warm, reassuring smile on her face. Hana's presence was a calming influence, as always, and Gianna's tension eased just a little.
"You're here," Hana said, voice soft but excited. "You look great."
Gianna gave a nervous smile, running a hand through her hair. "Thanks... I'm just a little nervous, you know? Meeting parents and all."
Hana chuckled softly and leaned in to kiss Gianna's cheek. "Don't be. My parents are pretty chill. They're going to love you."
Gianna raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "You're sure about that?"
"Positive." Hana's grin was wide, full of confidence. "My mom's probably going to offer you too much food, and my dad's going to ask you about your hobbies. They're nice. They're welcoming. They're going to love you because I love you."
Hearing those words—I love you—made Gianna's heart leap in her chest. They had said it before, but hearing it in this moment, right before meeting her girlfriend's parents, felt like something solidifying between them. Gianna felt a warmth in her chest, a combination of joy and gratitude.
"I'm going to hold you to that," she said, offering a small laugh. "Lead the way."
Hana gave her a playful nudge and opened the door. "You got it."
As they stepped inside the house, the familiar smell of something baking hit Gianna's nose—sweet, comforting. She immediately felt the warmth of the home, which only made her nerves more pronounced. She heard voices from the kitchen, and Hana gently squeezed her hand, leading her in that direction.
"Mom, Dad, this is Gianna," Hana called as they entered the kitchen.
Gianna's eyes immediately landed on Hana's parents, who were standing near the stove. Her heart skipped a beat as she took in the sight of them: Hana's mom had the same dark, curly hair that Hana did, her warm smile wide and welcoming. Her dad looked to be about the same height as Hana, with short, neatly styled hair and a more reserved but kind expression. The two of them looked like the perfect pair, and Gianna couldn't help but feel the weight of the situation hit her again.
Hana's mom stepped forward first, her arms open for a hug. "It's so nice to finally meet you, Gianna," she said, pulling her into a warm embrace. "I've heard so much about you."
Gianna felt a little awkward, but she managed to return the hug, offering a soft smile. "It's great to meet you too. I've heard so much about you as well."
"Good things, I hope," Hana's mom said, her eyes twinkling with amusement.
"Definitely good things," Gianna confirmed, her voice a little nervous but sincere.
Hana's dad stepped up next, shaking Gianna's hand firmly. "Welcome to our home, Gianna. We're glad to finally meet you."
Gianna smiled, shaking his hand with a firm grip. "Thank you for having me. I've heard nothing but great things."
Hana's dad gave her a small nod before turning to his wife. "Dinner should be ready soon. We were just making lasagna—Hana's favorite. I hope that's okay with you."
"Lasagna sounds amazing," Gianna said with a grin, her stomach growling a little at the thought of it. "I love lasagna."
"Great!" Hana's mom said cheerfully. "Please, make yourself at home. Have a seat. We're just finishing up here."
As they all sat down at the kitchen table, Hana's mom immediately started asking questions, her tone light and casual. "So, Gianna, tell us about yourself. Hana says you're quite creative. What do you like to do in your free time?"
Gianna relaxed a little, the warmth of the conversation starting to ease her nerves. "Well, I love making videos—mostly for fun, you know? I started making them on TikTok and it sort of snowballed from there. I also love drawing, painting, and working on little DIY projects. I guess you could say I'm a bit of a jack-of-all-trades."
Hana's mom smiled, clearly impressed. "That's wonderful! Creativity is such an important thing to nurture. And you seem like such a driven young woman, too."
Gianna felt her cheeks heat up at the compliment. "Thanks," she said softly, feeling grateful for the warm reception.
Hana's dad chimed in, his voice warm but a little more reserved. "What kind of content do you make? I'm not very up-to-date with TikTok, but Hana's told us a little."
Gianna grinned. "It's mainly silly stuff—trends, skits, sometimes just random things I think of. I don't take it too seriously, though. It's more of a fun outlet."
"That's good," Hana's dad replied, nodding thoughtfully. "It's nice to hear you enjoy what you do."
The evening continued with light conversation, Hana's parents asking Gianna about her hobbies, her plans for the future, and her family. The more they talked, the more at ease Gianna became. She found herself laughing along with them, relaxing into the rhythm of the evening. Hana's parents were warm, kind-hearted people, and they were genuinely interested in her as a person, not just as Hana's girlfriend.
But it wasn't until they were all gathered around the table for dinner that Gianna felt completely welcomed. Hana's mom served the lasagna, and as everyone dug in, Gianna felt a sense of belonging she hadn't expected.
Hana glanced over at her, their eyes meeting briefly before Hana offered her a small smile, her hand brushing against Gianna's under the table. In that moment, Gianna realized that no matter how nervous she had been, this felt right. She wasn't just meeting her girlfriend's parents—she was becoming part of something bigger, something meaningful.
And as Hana's mom passed the bread and Hana's dad asked Gianna about her favorite books, Gianna couldn't help but feel grateful. Grateful for this moment, for Hana, and for the family that was so eager to include her.
Everything was falling into place, and it felt like home.
