Jungkook stepped into the room, the air thick with tension. His brother, dk, sat with their parents at the royal table, discussing something with furrowed brows. The normally warm and welcoming room felt unusually cold, and Jungkook could sense that something was wrong. He silently approached and sat on the royal sofa, his heart suddenly pounding with unease.
Dae kyun noticing his presence, looked up with a knowing glint in his eyes. His lips curved into a slight, almost smug smile. “Ah, there you are, Jungkook. I have something to tell you,” he began, his tone far too casual for the situation.
Jungkook’s chest tightened. "What is it?"
Without any hesitation, dk’s voice cut through the silence. “You’re getting married tomorrow.”
Jungkook blinked, confused for a moment, before his mind caught up with the words. “What?” he whispered, the shock evident on his face.
“It’s part of the Spring Festival,” dae kyun explained. “It’s a celebration where everyone comes together with their mates. And if you haven’t found yours, you’ll find them there. It's tradition.” His tone was deceptively soft, as though he were explaining something as simple as a royal decree, but Jungkook could feel the weight of something far heavier.
His heart sank. "But... I don't have a mate," Jungkook murmured, his voice barely a whisper. His eyes flitted toward his parents, whose expressions had turned grim. He knew this wasn’t just a casual suggestion. There was something much deeper behind it.
“Actually, you do,” dk continued, leaning back with his arms crossed, clearly enjoying the discomfort in the air. “It’s been arranged. You will marry someone tomorrow at the festival. Don’t worry, Jungkook, you’ll be fine.”
Jungkook’s pulse quickened, and a knot twisted painfully in his stomach. His thoughts were spiraling. The idea of marrying someone he didn’t even know—someone who wasn’t his destined mate—felt wrong. He had always believed that mates were fated, that love was something that would naturally bloom. The thought of being forced into a marriage like this... it sent a wave of insecurity crashing over him.
What if his mate didn’t want him? What if they rejected him, the way dk always seemed to? The doubt surged within him, and he didn’t know where it came from. The suffocating feeling of being out of control, of being powerless, gnawed at him.
“No,” Jungkook said firmly, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside. He turned to face dae kyun his older brother’s words still echoing in his mind. “I won’t do that.”
His parents, who had been silent up until now, exchanged worried glances. Jungkook could feel their eyes on him, their disappointment heavy in the air. His mother looked pained, while his father, usually so strong, seemed to be carrying an invisible burden.
“Jungkook,” his mother spoke softly, her voice filled with concern, “please… understand. Your brother is only doing this for the good of the kingdom. This marriage—it’s necessary.”
Jungkook shook his head, feeling a sudden wave of defiance rise up within him. “It’s not necessary! I should be able to choose my own mate. I shouldn’t be forced into something like this!” His eyes turned to Seokjin, who watched him with an almost indifferent expression. “Why are you doing this?”
Dk’s gaze softened, but it wasn’t with compassion. “You’re my responsibility, Jungkook,” he said coolly. “I know what’s best for you. And I won’t let you make a fool of yourself. You’ll marry tomorrow. It’s already decided.”The way dk spoke made Jungkook’s blood boil. It was as if his own desires didn’t matter. His brother had already made the choice for him, and no matter how much Jungkook resisted, the weight of the decision was looming over him.
Jungkook’s eyes darted to his parents again. They didn’t argue, didn’t fight for him. His heart sank as he realized the truth—they were trapped. And his brother had them wrapped around his finger.
“I won’t do this,” Jungkook repeated, more quietly now, his voice tinged with defeat. “I won’t marry someone I don’t love.” He felt Kookoo stir inside him, a comforting presence, but even that didn’t calm his rising fear.
Dk stood, his expression hardening. “You will, whether you want to or not.”
Jungkook stared at him, unwilling to back down, but the shadow of helplessness began to creep into his thoughts. His brother had the power. And no matter how much he resisted, tomorrow’s festival felt like a trap he could not escaped.
