Ranpo was waiting on the sidewalk, for a taxi, or, if his hunch was correct, for his boyfriend to show up. Whichever one came first.
"Hey, Poe!" the young detective called at the sight of a gothic-looking man with a raccoon on his shoulder. The master architect spun around at the voice; the critter already jumped off his shoulder and scurried towards the younger.
"Ranpo-kun! Fancy meeting you here!" The writer replied, hurrying after his child pet. The detective had known his boyfriend was in town, and since they both seemed free, he decided it was a great time to go on a date. And so, he latched onto the writer's arm,
"Hey~ you free today?" He asked in a singsong voice. Poe flushed a bit and looked away, but still he nodded. Gods he was so cute. Karl already found his way onto Ranpo and took a comfortable place in the crook of his neck as the pair made their way into a shopping center and popular date spot.
"so...Ranpo..." Edgar started,
"Hm?" The boy in question looked up at his partner questioningly
"I-I would...you....um... would.." the goth stammered, "I've finished writing my new novel!" Poe said a bit too loud.
His companion only chuckled at that "I'll make sure to read it when I get home." he decided, already dragging his boyfriend by the arm to the nearest candy store. The door opened with a soft ding! As the pair went in, a sweet aroma wafted through the cold air.
Ranpo made his way to the custom mix section, stuffing gummies and chocolates into his small plastic bags until he couldn't carry anymore in one hand and plopping them on the scale which resulted in a hefty total. On the other hand, Poe walked over to the wall of chocolates, specifically heart-shaped ones. He picked out a few he was sure the young detective would like and got it in a custom, pre-ordered box before pocketing it. He was trying to be discreet, and had hidden it in a way regular people wouldn't have noticed, however, Ranpo was no regular person, and he saw immediately what his boyfriend was doing. Honestly, why did he even bother?
Unless...
"Ranpo-kun, are you done?" The writer's voice sounded from behind him.
"Uh-huh!" The younger one nodded "I just need to-"
The architect stopped him from reaching into his pocket. "I'll pay, I doubt you even remembered to bring your wallet." The detective was a bit surprised, not because his boyfriend had offered to pay. No, when it comes to money Poe is usually the one paying considering his extremely high salary. A few overpriced candies were nothing. What really caught Ranpo off guard was that Edgar had been correct about him not having his wallet.
Impressive the detective thought, not even bothering to hide his proud smile.-Poe-
Poe paid for Ranpo's candies since, just as he figured, the detective didn't bring his wallet. The writer looked up at his companion's face after placing his card back in his phone case wallet and saw a proud expression on his face.
OH MY LORD! The goth thought. The way the younger one was looking at the architect made his heart flutter like an unkindness of ravens, flocking restlessly around the London tower
...oh... Ranpo, I have no doubt your brilliant mind has long figured out how I feel about you, maybe before even I myself knew. You are just tormenting me with your presence, aren't you? As if sensing his master's emotional stress, Karl wrapped his fluffy tail around Poe's face, effectively covering up the red blush rapidly blooming across the writer's face.
"Mmmfh...Karl! You're suffocating me!" Edgar cried from under the fluffy gray and black tail. Ranpo chuckled at the scene, taking out his phone to snap a picture, much to the older one's embarrassment before gently taking the raccoon off his face.
"You ok, Poe?" The man in question nodded while taking in gasps of air, trying to ignore how cute the one in front of him looked while holding onto Karl.
"We should probably go now." He declared, walking out of the candy store while hoping the detective would think that the red on his face was due to lack of oxygen.
"Oh come on, he's way too smart for that. Just don't mess this day up, Edgar." The writer muttered to himself in English.
The two detectives made their way around the shopping center until they came upon a line of bakeries. It was here that Poe handed Ranpo a spare credit card to entertain himself with.
"I need to go get something." The goth explained. Ranpo nodded and headed toward one of the bakeries, eyeing the powdered doughnuts in the display case. Seeing this, Poe walked off. Weaving himself through the center, past shops and cafes, past shoppers going in and out of overpriced stores and salespeople shouting deals that sound good at first but then you think about it for more than 5 seconds and find it's not worth it. The man eventually found himself in front of an expensive-looking jewelry store and headed inside.
The woman at the counter greeted him as he headed towards it. "Hello sir, are you looking for anything today?" She asked.
"Actually, I'm here to pick up a custom order under the name Edgar Allen Poe," he replied.
"Sure thing, Poe-san." The woman nodded and headed into the backroom.
A few moments later, she re-emerged with a small box covered in black velvet. She placed it on the counter and opened it to reveal a custom ring just the way Poe had ordered it. It had a silver band, decorated by feathers, accumulating at the top, supporting a shining, deep-cut emerald.
"Perfect." the writer breathed. Of course, he was aware that silver blackened quite easily so platinum would have been a better, longer investment. However, he wasn't asking for Ranpo's hand in marriage just yet. And being his boyfriend was very much something that could be temporary. But when the time is right, he will get him one with a platinum band and a green diamond. The architect signed the papers and paid for the ring, carefully placing it in his pocket before heading out.
On Poe's way back to the bakeries where he left the detective. Karl had suddenly scrambled off his neck. "Karl- wha-" Edgar started but was cut off by a high-pitched scream. He whipped his head in the direction of it and to his horror and shock saw Karl had climbed up onto some random woman! He quickly rushed up to the stranger, to try and assist her before either she or Karl got hurt. After he managed to pry an excited, yet confused Karl off the very startled young lady, he looked up and noticed that from her thick black hair to her face shape to her bright, green eyes, she looked uncannily like- "I'm so sorry ma'am, I don't know what's gotten into him, he usually doesn't act like this!" Poe apologized, bowing deeply and frantically.
The woman, still flustered, mumbled some words of forgiveness before she all but ran away. The man sighed, he couldn't blame the woman for her reaction as he picked up his misbehaving pet to face him at eye level.
"You're not one to do that, Karl. So why did you?" Silence "Are you...perhaps sick?" the raccoon tilted his head at the goth, staring at him with beady eyes. Edgar sighed "Sometimes, I wonder if you have a single thought between your ears, or if it's all just fluff. Come along, Ranpo's waiting."-Ranpo-
Poe came back, after a few minutes, noticeably unnerved and holding onto Karl who too, looked down. Ranpo was sitting on a bench, enjoying pastries and soda he bought in the past few minutes.
"You're back!" The young detective chimed, his mouth half full.
"Ranpo...there's somewhere I want to go with you." The architect said, holding out a heart-shaped box of chocolates.
During the train ride to the place, Poe had been mumbling a few things under his breath in English, such as. "Oh what if this is taking things too fast? We are still technically part of rival organizations, I don't even live in Japan! But Ranpo, my dear... you make my heart flutter. I cannot keep this to myself. Nevermore..nevermore..." The detective recognized his name and a few words here and there, but the rest was a mystery. He had heard Lucy back at the coffee shop talking in English sometimes but those were mostly curse words, none of which he heard coming out of his boyfriend's mouth.
The warehouse was dark and empty, having been abandoned for a good few years. The sun has long set, casting an eerie glow in the decaying building. For many but passionate urban explorers, this would be a questionable date spot at best and a reason to report suspicion of murder at worst. But to the two detectives, this brought back many fond memories.
"Poe... this is—" He started.
"Where we first met." The older one finished for him. The younger smiled, reminiscing back to that day.
He had been called to investigate a body, one that was shot in the head before their face was smashed in. A true crime of passion. However, any evidence pointing to the culprit was meticulously hidden and almost completely gone. At least, to regular people. Ranpo had figured it out within seconds of scanning the room, but out of curiosity, he had checked the notebook of the other detective who arrived at the scene only a few minutes before him. To his surprise, almost all the evidence had been jotted down with only one piece missing that the other was sure to find soon enough. Seeing this, he felt an unfamiliar yet pleasant chill go down his spine. This guy...was something else. Now that detective was standing before him, having been his boyfriend for almost a year. Moonlight cascaded through the windows, bathing him in cool, white light, making him look hauntingly majestic. A cute blush across his face, his bangs splitting to reveal those beautifully intelligent eyes usually obscured.
"Ranpo Edogawa," Edgar said, in an unusually assertive tone as he reached into his pocket and took out a small black box. a ring box. Despite somewhat predicting this, Ranpo gasped. Instead of getting down on one knee though, he only stepped closer and gently grasped the other's hand, using the other to carefully open the box, revealing a stunning ring. "Will you be my boyfriend?"
...What? At that, the detective couldn't help but burst out laughing. Seeing this, the goth retracted, looking hurt and embarrassed. Ranpo quickly stopped.
"Wait no! I didn't mean it like that!" He exclaimed, gripping the other's shoulders, looking up into his eyes sincerely, yet with a soft smile on his face. "I just thought we were already dating."
