As the sun dipped below the horizon, Daniel's sleek black car pulled up to Selena's house. The day had been magical, full of laughter, shared moments, and a connection that left Daniel's heart full. He stepped out of the car to open the door for Selena, a warm smile playing on his lips.
"I hope you enjoyed the surprise," he said, his voice soft yet playful.
Selena smiled back, clutching a balloon tightly in her hand. "I did. It was... perfect. Thank you, Daniel."
For a moment, he hesitated, as if trying to find the right words. His gaze lingered on her, his usual confident demeanor replaced with something tender. "I'm glad you liked it. I wanted today to be special for you."
Selena's cheeks flushed as she stepped out of the car. "It really was. I'll see you on Monday?"
Daniel leaned slightly against the car, his smirk returning. "Only if I don't kidnap you for another adventure first."
Selena laughed, shaking her head. "Goodnight, Daniel."
"Goodnight, Selena," he replied, his voice lingering on her name as she walked toward her front door.
As Daniel drove off, Selena turned the key and stepped into her home, still smiling from the day. But her smile faltered when she noticed something unusual—a pair of men's shoes at the entrance, unfamiliar yet vaguely recognizable.
"That's odd," she murmured to herself.
Clutching the balloon tighter, she moved toward the living room, her steps quickening with curiosity. But nothing could have prepared her for what she saw when she entered.
Her father was sitting comfortably on the couch, a rare sight given his busy schedule. Kevin was sprawled on the floor, playing with a toy car. Her mom was setting out snacks on the coffee table. And there, sitting calmly in their living room, was Rafael Diaz.
Selena froze, her heart skipping a beat. "Rafael?" she blurted, her voice a mix of shock and confusion.
Rafael looked up from his conversation with her dad, his usual confident grin softening when his eyes met hers. "Hey, Selena," he said casually, but there was an unmistakable glint of something in his expression—something that made her stomach twist.
Her mom turned, smiling warmly. "Selena! Look who came to visit. Rafael's dad and your father are colleagues, did you know?"
Selena blinked, still processing. "I... no, I didn't."
Kevin jumped up, waving excitedly. "Selena! Look who's here! Rafael said he knows you from school!"
Rafael chuckled, standing up. "Surprise," he said, his tone teasing but his eyes locked on hers.
Selena clutched the balloon tighter, her mind spinning. After the dreamy day she'd had with Daniel, coming home to find Rafael in her living room felt like stepping into a completely different world—one she wasn't sure how to navigate.
Selena's mom noticed her lingering at the doorway and smiled warmly. "Selena, don't just stand there. Come sit with Rafael and talk. He's been waiting for you."
Selena hesitated, clutching the string of her balloon like a lifeline. The idea of sitting next to Rafael felt daunting, especially when the entire day had been spent in a whirlwind of emotions with Daniel.
Rafael, on the other hand, seemed perfectly at ease. He sat on the couch with one arm draped casually over the backrest, exuding a laid-back confidence.
He wore a fitted black Henley that highlighted his athletic build, paired with dark-wash jeans that looked effortlessly stylish. His sleeves were pushed up, revealing his toned forearms, and his tousled hair gave him an almost movie-star charm. A simple silver chain peeked out from under his shirt, adding a subtle edge to his look.
Selena couldn't help but notice how striking he looked, the kind of effortless cool that made her heart skip a beat. His deep brown eyes, framed by long lashes, seemed to glint with mischief as they met hers, and his smirk grew wider, as though he could sense her unease.
"Hey," Rafael said, patting the seat beside him. "Don't be shy. I don't bite... much."
Selena rolled her eyes, trying to mask her nerves with a playful scoff. "I'm not shy," she said, though the blush creeping up her cheeks betrayed her. She walked over and sat down, keeping a noticeable gap between them.
Rafael leaned slightly toward her, his cologne—a subtle mix of cedarwood and spice—making her heart race. "So, how was your day?" he asked, his voice smooth and easy, like he wasn't sitting there looking like he just stepped out of a fashion ad.
Selena glanced at him, her lips parting slightly as if to speak, but then her mom chimed in from the kitchen. "Selena, don't be rude! Rafael came all this way. Talk to him!"
Selena sighed, feeling trapped. Her mom meant well, but the weight of Rafael's presence and the lingering glow of her time with Daniel made her feel like she was caught in an emotional tug-of-war. She tried to steady her thoughts, but Rafael's piercing gaze and easy charm weren't making it any easier.
As Kevin animatedly talked to Rafael, Selena sat quietly, her fingers nervously fiddling with the hem of her top. Kevin was in awe of Rafael, going on and on about how amazing he was at football.
"You should've seen him last month, Selena! He scored the winning goal with this crazy bicycle kick! It was like watching a movie!" Kevin exclaimed, practically bouncing on the couch.
Rafael chuckled, ruffling Kevin's hair. "It wasn't that crazy. But thanks, buddy. You're hyping me up too much."
Kevin grinned. "You're my favorite player, after Messi, of course."
"That's fair," Rafael replied with a laugh. "Messi's a legend."
They began chatting about their favorite players and memorable matches, with Rafael effortlessly matching Kevin's enthusiasm. Selena glanced at them, her lips curving into a small smile despite her nervousness. Rafael was surprisingly great with Kevin, and it only added to her growing discomfort, making him seem even more perfect.
"Excuse me, I'll be right back!" Kevin announced suddenly, dashing off to the bathroom.
As soon as he left, the room felt heavier, quieter, and more intimate. Selena shifted in her seat, feeling Rafael's attention turn fully toward her.
"So..." Rafael began, leaning slightly toward her, his voice softer now. "How was your day, Selena?"
She looked up at him, her cheeks warming under his steady gaze. "It was good," she said quickly, hoping the short answer would suffice.
But Rafael wasn't letting her off that easily. "Just good? Come on, you've got to give me more than that. What did you do?"
Selena hesitated, her fingers twisting together in her lap. "I went out," she admitted quietly.
"Out?" Rafael raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "That's vague. What kind of 'out'? A date or something?"
Her heart skipped a beat at his question, and she looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "Just... out," she muttered, hoping he wouldn't press further.
Rafael chuckled, sensing her unease but choosing not to push her too hard. "Alright, I'll let you off the hook this time. But next time, you owe me details."
Selena risked a glance at him, her blush deepening as she saw the playful glint in his eyes. "Fine," she mumbled, though she wasn't sure if she'd ever be ready for that conversation.
