Chapter 6: Home Is Where the Horror Is
The journey to SpongeBob’s house was far from easy. The streets of Bikini Bottom were a gauntlet of destruction and death. Zombies roamed aimlessly, their grotesque bodies illuminated by the flickering glow of broken streetlights. Severed limbs and pools of blood littered the ground, while the smell of decay choked the air.
“Stay sharp, y’all,” Sandy whispered, clutching her weapon tightly. “We’re not far now, but these waters are treacherous.”

Obstacle After Obstacle
The group moved cautiously, navigating around overturned boats, burning rubble, and clusters of zombies. At one point, a swarm of jellyfish, mutated and sparking with uncontrolled electricity, forced them to take a detour through a collapsed building. Inside, they found themselves cornered by a zombified eel, its massive body slithering through the wreckage.
“Barnacle crap!” Squidward cursed, narrowly dodging its snapping jaws.
With quick thinking, Sandy used a broken pipe to pin the eel’s head while Plankton blasted it with his mecha suit’s laser. They barely made it out alive, covered in grime and even more exhausted.
“This better be worth it,” Squidward muttered, panting.
“It is,” SpongeBob said, determination in his voice. “It’s my home. It has to be safe.”

Arriving at SpongeBob’s House
Finally, they reached the familiar sight of SpongeBob’s pineapple. But the sight that awaited them stopped them dead in their tracks. Lying in the front yard was Patrick, or what was left of him. His lifeless body was sprawled across the ground, his pink flesh torn to shreds. His eyes were ripped out of their sockets, leaving only bloody, hollow voids. His intestines spilled out like grotesque streamers, tangled with fragments of kelp.
SpongeBob fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face. “Patrick…” he choked out, his voice breaking. “No… not you.”
Sandy knelt beside him, placing a trembling hand on his shoulder. Tears welled in her own eyes as she looked at the remains of their friend. “I’m so sorry, SpongeBob,” she whispered.
Squidward stood back, grimacing but silent. Even he couldn’t muster a sarcastic remark in the face of such horror.
“We… we have to keep moving,” Plankton said, though his voice lacked its usual bravado.
SpongeBob wiped his tears and stood shakily. “Let’s go inside,” he said quietly. “We’ll… we’ll be safe there.”

Mutant Gary
The group entered the house cautiously. At first, everything seemed quiet. But as they moved deeper inside, a low, guttural growl echoed through the halls. SpongeBob froze.
“Gary?” he called out hesitantly.
From the shadows emerged a creature that barely resembled the lovable snail SpongeBob had raised. Gary’s shell was cracked and oozing a greenish slime. His body was mangled and twisted, with sharp, jagged teeth protruding from his mouth. His eyes were hollow and glowing faintly, and he moved with a jerky, unnatural motion.
“Gary…” SpongeBob whispered, his heart breaking. “No…”
The mutant snail lunged, letting out a horrifying screech. SpongeBob barely ducked in time as Gary’s teeth snapped inches from his face.
“We have to take it down!” Sandy yelled, readying her weapon.
“No!” SpongeBob shouted, tears streaming down his face. “He’s my pet! He’s my best friend!”
“Look at him, SpongeBob!” Squidward barked. “He’s gone! That’s not Gary anymore!”
SpongeBob hesitated, his hands trembling. But as Gary lunged again, nearly biting Plankton’s suit, SpongeBob knew what he had to do. With shaking hands, he grabbed a sharp piece of coral and stepped forward.
“I’m sorry, Gary,” he sobbed. “I love you.”
With one swift strike, SpongeBob drove the coral into Gary’s body. The mutant snail let out one final screech before collapsing. SpongeBob fell to his knees, clutching the lifeless body of his beloved pet and crying uncontrollably.

A Moment of Respite
The group gave SpongeBob time to grieve before setting to work. They barricaded the house and rummaged through SpongeBob’s hidden stash of Krabby Patties and other food supplies. The first real meal they’d had in days brought a small measure of comfort, though the horrors of the day weighed heavily on them.
As they prepared to leave, SpongeBob stood up, his face streaked with tears but filled with resolve. “Let’s go,” he said quietly. “We have to stop this. For Patrick. For Gary. For everyone.”
The group nodded, gathering their supplies and stepping out into the night once more. Their next mission loomed ahead, but the scars of what they had lost would stay with them forever.
