A Normal Day

It was a normal day. A normal day. Oh, why couldn't it've been?? It wasn't fair. Life was perfect before he came! Stupid.

She was tending to her garden, as she normally did. When someone washed ashore. Nothing new or interesting usually happened on her island, so she decided to check it out.
That was the worst mistake of her life.
She sat beside him, at least, she figured it was a him, and wondered how he got there. He was soaked, hair matted and covering his face. His hair was probably a dirty blond, but the water made it look a brown shade. His tan shirt was torn and wet, his pants the same. He only had one sandal, the other probably lost in the sea waves. He had a sword loosely sheathed around his waist. She didn't dare touch it.
He looked half-drowned, which he probably was. That jerked her. What if he died?? But then he coughed, spluttering out some water.
She let out a soft chuckle. "What- where am I?" He asked, his voice raspy. "You're on Ogygia!" She said with a smile.
"Ogygi-what??"
"Ogygia." She answer patiently. "What's your name?"
The man paused. "Odysseus."
He sounded like he wanted to say more, which confused her. What more was there to say than your name? "I'm Calypso," she said, even though he didn't ask.
"How... where are we?" Odysseus asked. Wow, that's a big name. "We're on Ogygia, silly! I already told you!" "Y-es, but where?"
Calypso opened and closed her mouth a few times. "Nowhere?" She said helpfully. Odysseus rolled his eyes and stood up, fully sheathing his sword. "Look, you don't seem to be in a hurry but I have a wife to get back to. So if you'll excuse me, I'm going to build a raft."
Calypso hurried after him. "A raft? You want to leave? So soon?" What she didn't say was, 'You have a wife?!' She tried to keep her expression calm, but it was hard. "Look, Ithaca needs me," Odysseus said without looking back at her. "Ithaca?" Calypso asked. "Oh! Is that a kingdom?" "It's my kingdom," Odysseus responded.
Calypso paused, stopping short. "Wait, so you're a... king?" She asked. "Yeah," Odysseus responded, bending down to gather a few sticks before moving on.
Calypso followed him in silence after that, studying him. He didn't seem very kingly. At least, how she believed kingly should look.
His shoulders slumped, his feet dragged a bit, and his eyes had this tired sadness. She couldn't imagine any king to look like that.
Finally, Odysseus turned and looked her in the eyes. "Ok, don't you have somewhere to be? A family to attend? Not just stare at me?" Now she could see a spark of royalty in his eyes, but not much. "No... I've been here for a long while. Time is hard in Ogygia. Perhaps... a hundred years?" Odysseus dropped his sticks and stared at her, awestruck. "Wait... you're a goddess?"
Calypso nodded, giggling. "Are those important in your world?" She asked. Odysseus struggled for words. Wow, she really needed a nickname for him. Perhaps Ody? "Yeah, they're worshipped. Adored. How could you not know about that?" "I've been here all my life," Calypso said, spreading her arms. "I don't know anything else."
Odysseus looked at her with cold, clear blue eyes. He fell to his knees and buried his head in his arms, sobbing.
Definitely not kingly.
"What's wrong?" Calypso asked. She was extremely confused. One minute Ody had been defensive, and the next he broke down.
"My wife's as far away as who knows where, 600 men under my command died, and now I'm stuck on an island that looks like paradise but is the underworld in disguise. My son has never met me, and here I am, a murderer. A monster. I'll kill Poseidon for this."
Calypso blinked at him, confused. "Poseidon... what did he do?" She was afraid Odysseus was loosing his mind. "I was so close to home..." he whispered. "And then his storm... he should have thanked me. I spared his son. But no, he said I should've killed him. And then Aeolus.... His stupid games... the stupid bag. My crew... stupid. They opened the windbag... released the storm... Circe... trickery. Pigs. Sirens... Scylla. I sacrificed six of my men to her. I'm a murderer. The fight. Eurylochus... he was mad. I was stabbed. We crashed. The sun god's cows... stupid hunger. Zeus... punishment. All dead. The ship's gone..." He rambled on, and then shouted to the sky, "IS THIS YOUR REVENGE, ATHENA?! IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?! PUNISHMENT??"
Calypso stared at him, jaw slack with disbelief. Her heart pounded. She wanted to get closer to him, but also run in the other direction. She did what was in her heart, which was her next mistake.
"Stay here," she offered. "I could make you immortal. We could live happily. You and I... we could love each other.
Ody looked up at her. "No. No, I need to get back to my wife. My son." Calypso was hurt, but say after day she kept trying.
Which, looking back at now, she hates herself for doing it.
