Sophie Foster swung open the large glass doors to her balony, hoping some fresh air would help her head. She blinked, trying to keep the tears at bay. She considered grabbing her special Imparter and calling her sister, but worried that Amy might think it's an emergency. In reality, Sophie just missed her family. Her human family. The people she'd been forced to abandon to start a new life. She took a shuddery breath, a sob catching in her throat.
It had been a rough day. The Neverseen had been very close to kidnapping Keefe, and Sophie had only barely escaped jumping away from Lady Gisela as she shot a blast of soporidine at her head. Sophie shuddered at the memory as it filled her head. She knew sleeping was a long-shot, though it usually was. A cold breeze ruffled her blonde hair, and Sophie turned to go back inside.Once inside, Sophie slipped on some fuzzy socks and an oversized hoodie. She settled onto her massive bed, piling blankets over herself to make a Sophie Cocoon, her human picture book resting on her lap. She had just flipped past four-year-old Sophie holding baby Amy, when a knock at the door came.
"Come in," she said, brushing away tears as she peeked through a crack in the pile of blankets.
She saw Keefe open the door, a smirk on his face, his ice-blue eyes searching the room till they landed on her.
"Fo-ster! Where for art thou, Lovely Lady Foster?"
"I'm in here." Sophie said, reluctantly emerging from her mini pillow and blanket fort. He raised his eyebrows, cocking his head when he saw her outfit.
"Interesting outfit, Foster. Though, to be honest, you look hot in anything." He grinned, and Sophie blushed. Is he just teasing? She thought.
"Uh, yeah, thanks." She looked down at the ground, and Keefe seemed to be able to tell she'd been crying.
"Foster, you okay?" He asked gently, and Sophie nodded.
"I'm fine!" But he didn't look convinced. She sighed, "yeah. It's stupid. I was just-- missing my human life, kinda."
Keefe looked surprised. "Foster, that's not stupid at all. And I hate seeing you upset, so what if I grab the human clothes from when I stayed in London, and we snack on some E.L.Fudges?"
Sophie's eyes lit up. "Can we? That'd be great!"
Keefe grinned. "Of course! I'll be right back." He said, reaching for the door handle."WHAT is That Boy doing here?!" Grady demanded once Keefe materialized in front of the house.
"Daaad! He's just here to hang out!" Sophie said exasperatedly.
"Oh, is that all?" Grady crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"Yes, that's all! Now can you go help Mom or something? He'll be up here any second!" She said as Keefe walked in the door. "Did you miss me?"
Grady glared at him, then turned around and left.
Sophie blew out a breath, then jumped up and down when she saw the outfit he was wearing. A Batman T-shirt, jeans, and blue sneakers. He opened the bag he'd swung over his shoulders, and lifted out a pack of Oreos, Rice Krispies, and E.L.Fudges, as well as the TV like device Dex had made them to share.
"So," he started, "I heard something about a movie called 'Elf' while I was in Humanland... is that one any good?"
"Yeah, it's a classic. Do you wanna watch it?" She nodded, remembering the cheesey Christmas movie vividly.
"Sure! It's pretty funny what humans think us elves are like, even though they do us dirty. Still funny, though."The couple sat on Sophie's bed, snacking on cookies and pausing the movie every few moments to chat about random stuff, memories, funny stories. And Sophie felt happy, happy that she had a friend like Keefe to help her during dark times, during tough hours. She knew he'd always be there for her, and she promised to herself she would always be there for him, too.
